Hi Joel. I have been nicotine-free for only a few days. This is attempt number 4 or 5, I think. I've been smoking since I was 13 (I am 22). First, I wanted to say that your website has seriously saved my life. I already wanted to quit, but after reading your site, I've found a strength I didn't think I had. The information on your website has made me angry enough at the tobacco industry and aware enough of what cigarettes do that I'll never smoke again...

Anyway, I have two questions for you.

1) A day or two into one of my previous quit attempts, when I'd breathe, my lungs would hurt. Is this because my lungs were healing?

2) My Dad has been smoking around me my entire life. What kind of damage has been done and can my lungs repair themselves completely if I stay smoke free and stay away from secondhand smoke?

Thanks in advance!
Sarah M.

Hello Sarah:

First, sorry it took me so long to get back to you here. We were having problems with MSN and couldn't post for a few days. Actually, almost all questions I get from the AskJoel board are via direct email. It is the best way to get the quickest responses for I get those emails almost immediately and don't have to deal with posting problems that we encounter from time to time during MSN upgrades.

As to why your lungs may be hurting, I am going to attach links to a few video that discuss this issue. It actually addersses your other question too. I am going to attach links to a few articles that also address issues that your questions pose. Hope this helps answers your concerns.

Joel
