The following question was submitted today by email. Unfortunately, the email reply I sent was kicked back, so I am answering it here on the board.

Question posed under the subject title of "Sponsor Guide"

Hello,

I’m planning to have a friend “sponsor and support?me in quitting. Could you suggest a link with information or “guide?on how to support me?

Thanks for your help, have a nice day!

My reply:

What is really going to be much more important than preparing a friend to support you is for you to arm yourself with sufficient information to support yourself. Here are a few links to articles that address this issue:

"My support group is responsible!"

Quitting for others

Individual Approaches Used to Motivate Smokers to Quit

“How can I get my family and friends to quit smoking??/SPAN>

Can we help a person quit when they are pretty sure they don't want to quit?

"Please don't smoke."

Negative support from others

What you can do to support yourself is to read the materials and watch the videos we have made available at www.whyquit.com, learning about your addiction and how to finally take control of it. If you have not done so already, start watching the videos at www.whyquit.com/joel. They will help get you started.

You can have your friend watch them too, but for all practical purposes, whether he or she does is not really that important. What is important is for you to understand all you can about quitting. The more you read and learn the more committed you will likely become to quit smoking and to stay free by knowing to never take another puff.
