Dear Joel,

I plan to stop smoking in the next 24 hours. I saw a doctor’s newspaper column recently where the doctor asserted that the air sacs in the lungs of long-time smokers are permanently destroyed and cannot heal. He said quitting smoking would perhaps prevent lung cancer but would do nothing for the destroyed air sacs. His example concerned the lungs of a 68-year old smoker who had smoked for many years. I am not that old but have smoked for 45 years. I found his column disturbing. Do you agree with this doctor?

Thank you for your time.

Diane
