Hi Trees,
give yourself something special for Christmas!
It is definitely a good idea to quit smoking: You will begin to feel the effect in of your running very soon after you have quit. Running will get infinitely easier.
Also, other small but very cool changes will happen within the first few weeks. These things happened to me, and I was thrilled about them. I hope they make quitting seem more like a good thing to you, not something to be scared of:
- You will smell nicer, you will be able to smell perfumed products on you all day long.
- The wheezing in the night will go. No more lying awake, listening to your own lungs.
- When you wake up in the morning, you won't taste cigarette smoke on your tongue.
- Your skin will look so much better.
- Normal toothpaste will make your teeth whiter than ever.
- Even when you get up at 4 am, your voice will be smooth and it will take much less energy to speak.
You write you don't want to gain weight but at the same time you write that you run a fabulous 5 km a day. *wow, admiration*
As I see, Joel and Gitte have already given you some very good things to read.
While it is true that some people gain weight after they have quit, it has to be said that it is not quitting smoking that makes them put on weight. It is an increased calorie intake. If you watch your eating and drinking so you don't take in more calories than before, and if you keep on running and keeping fit, you will not put on weight! Even if you did while you are in the period of adjusting, you would lose these extra inches in no time.
Don't let the fear of a possible weight gain keep you from quitting. Freedom from nicotine will be the best Christmas present you have ever given yourself.
