Well, tonite was the big nite - the facilitator of our discussion group at church had a party at the Cambridge Country Club to celebrate her finishing (and receiving) her PHD. I had actually gone shopping for a DRESS. Found a cute black thing with white embroidery at the neck and hem, and a little black crocheted "shrug" affair. Black patent leather shoes. Black patent purse. Black and white jewelry. Quite the fashion icon!! I had fretted over this because I didn't have anything to wear to the country club, and really didn't want to buy something. However, I bit the bullet and did it. Also cleaned the car out because I was sure they'd have valet parking.
Started off trying to get panty hose on. YIKES. I wonder just how long it's been since I wore panty hose, because I couldn't remember how to get the damn things on. I was rolling around on the floor, sweating, cussing, trying to get them on. Like trying to stuff 2 pounds of sausage in a 1 pound casing. It was AWFUL. I was thinking of all the women my age and size who are still working every day, and somehow getting these devices of torture on! YIKES!!
After I succeeded (but not well) at the panty hose thing, I had to fasten a necklace! Thought I was going to have a break down. Now, I'm wondering why on earth I thought I had to have jewelry to match my outfit. Sigh.
OK, all that done and off to the country club. YIKES!! Cambridge Country Club looks about like the shelter at Lions Park. HONEST!! Inside and out!! Valet parking????? I think not!! None of the pick up trucks (with gun racks) in the parking lot would have had a valet park it! (I am NOT making this up) I had made Graydon buy new pants, put on a tie and everything! My shoes had about 1/4 inch heels, and I couldn't really walk in them, but we hobbled into the shelter. Ummmm - I mean Country Club. YIKES!! "Dressy" in Cambridge seems to be clean jeans and a button up shirt. YIKES. Graydon was the ONLY man who had a tie on!!! I could hardly believe it. We were supposed to have "cocktails and hors d'ouerves" at 6:30. YIKES!! That consisted of a glass of wine and a cheese tray! (AGAIN, I am NOT making this up) Dinner was at 7, and it was some kind of chicken, salsbury steak. mashed taters and gravy and green beans. Hmmmm. The food was pretty good, but there was like just enough for everyone to have a small portion. Served buffet style, which surprised me since there wasn't really any choice. They also had a couple kinds of pie for dessert- interesting. This was NOT what I was expecting from a country club!!!!!
Kathy, the gal who got the PHD, had said all the people invited had "supported" her in her effort, in some way. She made little certificates for each person, and introduced every single one individually and made remarks about them - how she knew each one, etc. It took like FOREVER.
I really do like Kathy, and the people at our table were all the discussion group people, who I REALLY like a lot - so, that part of it was good. However, I would much rather have been in my sweat pants, fishing!!!! So there.
And, thus, the country bumpkin went to the country club. Sigh.
Love y'all
