I went ahead and did it anyways.I have a new rescue. I wanted to go another size up. This is our first bigger bird. He still needs alot of taming, as I have been told that the old owners didnt get him out of his cage since he was "mean". We mostly move him with a perch. Although he has stepped onto my wrist three times since came came to us on Friday. Any advice is welcome. And look how fat he is!! Ruby |

Ruby, I hope it is going well with your rescue bird. He is really pretty, so hope you will win his heart. I'm sure with time and patience, he'll become a happy camper. Too2, does your zon prefer chewing your bird magazines over other types? He is also a really pretty bird. |

Friday afternoon it warmed up really nice and I decided to see how he does with a spray bottle. I couldnt really tell at first cause he wouldnt do much. But when I left him alone for a few minutes he started using his little water bowl. It was hilarious! After awhile he stepped onto my wrist (With no problem)and I moved him to his cage with a bigger bowl. He didnt like the pan I tried to get him to use. After his bath, I do believe he is a few shades lighter!! Thanks for letting me share! Ruby |

HAHA !Nan......I dont believe for one minute he is a sweatheart. I just got him at the right time. When you guys have a new bird you are trying to get to know and he isnt used to being handled.......are you persistant? How did you get yours to come around? Do you take your time and let him see you do things and talk to him. My hubby is persistant, but I think he may be annoying him more than anything.Ozzy does lunge at him from time to time. He doesnt lunge at me,but I still use a perch most of the time,so I can make him go where I need him without him protesting to much. I dont want to put myself in a position to where I have to jerk my hand away. Thanks, Ruby |

Ruby, that is great he seems to be trusting you more. My own opinion is to not push him too hard, too fast. I would think he needs time to develop trust, and being too pushy would go against him knowing you are safe. Your husband may come to regret pushing him too hard, especially if he gets bitten. |

Hi Ruby, The best tool you can use with any new parrot is empathy. I only have one parrot that might have been similar to your situation, Poeblo came to me from a broker at seven years. From the behaviours I believe most of that time was spent in a cage. Many of the things I asked him to do were blood letting experiences at first. After five years he wants to spend most of his time on my right shoulder he only pulls my ear if I've ignored several requests and it is extreamly rare that he draws blood. In all my handeling of parrots gentle confidence gives the best result. Good luck D.D. |

Hubby was out of town for a couple days and I told him maybe he should start from scratch. Maybe a slower approach, enough of the pushy. DD, sounds like you have done really well. I dont think he will be on my shoulder though. I like my ears......lol! I think I would give off scary vibes and he would take off my ear! I think the gentle confidence sounds like a great thing. Hoefully the hubby will slow down a bit. Thanks Ruby |
