Hi everyone,

Figaro came here today. He is just beautiful. Larger than I expected. I sure know what you all mean about the Amazon smell now. Smells fruity to me. Not sure what I think of the smell yet.

His mom cried all the way to my house, stayed only long enough to put cage together as she has her 3 week old son in the car sleeping. He is so cute. Not sure how long she will do without Fig, but I told her to call me anytime.

So, she told me his wings were clipped, he wanted to come out of his cage so on his play pen he went, rolled him into the kitchen. I accidentally tapped his playpen with my foot, he flew about 10 ft low. I guess his wings are not clipped enough! So I will call her to see if she can come over to clip more for me. If not, I will have to attempt as I don't want to keep him in cage all day long. We had to get a large dowel for him to step up on, he didnt want to of course, he rather of walked around the kitchen floor. 1st time on dowel, he flew again and knocked my vase of floors all over - water everywhere! OMG my husband was a nervous wreck!!! So he got dowel and we basically walked with him to his cage husband used dowel to put on this play pen which I moved next to his cage. We got a another type of perch (The brown ones-marzanite???) and he was scared so he went in his cage. Thank god! We didnt think he would get in his cage for us. So now, we are afraid to let him out until his wings are clipped.

He eat red, yellow, orange peppers, peanuts. None of his food. I gave him some zupreem and pretty bird and he eat this too.

Hopefully all will be ok. He is talking a bit, low but you can understand some of it. Gets real excited when my standard poodle goes near him.

I will keep you all posted. Any advice is always welcome!

Patti

Patti even with a wing clip they can still  fly/glide... otherwise they'd fall like a brick and break a wing or a leg... Since he's used to being out of his cage and on the gym, keep the dowell handy for quick  pick ups especially with a dog that isn't accoustomed to Fig and when he gets off the gym or his cage, promptly place him back inside... he'll learn.
As for the dog upsetting him, then the dog needs to not be permitted to sniff around the cage for the time being. Fig will become used to the dog when he himself feels safe and secure.
By next week you'll be an old pro with Fig and he'll be stepping up on command... take it slow... poor baby has to be a bit terrified in a new environment... maybe it would be better for a day or two keeping him cage bound and talking to him every chance you get...

Hi,
I didn't mean to imply that fig was scared of Bella, I think she was excited and like it. Fig is use to a big black lab and liked playing with him. But your right, for the next few days we should keep him in. I just feel so bad as he is use to being out most of the day.

So you don't think if we trimmed them it would be better. He was clipped by him mom but I am thinking that maybe they are not done completely? Maybe I will have them done instead by a vet or breeder around here. Not quite sure yet what to do, I need to talk to his mom first.

He really doesnt seem scared at all which I think is good, but no way have we or will be have him step up yet. Yes maybe next week. He puts his foot out for us, but I dont think for a
few days this is good itea.. We talk to him all the time, my oldest daughter thinks we are nuts talking to our birds like we do! She just doesnt get it.

Patti, as Toolady says, it's important that their wings be clipped only enough to prevent them from getting lift. In my limited experience, each bird (not just species) is different.

Except for my Hahns Macaw Beau, mine are very streamlined, and can actually fly with very little feather. So Basil (Indian Ringneck), Pepper (Cockatiel) and Sage (White-Eared Conure) all get all of their flight feathers clipped right down. They can still fly short distances, and can glide down easily from the top of a cage or stand, but they can't fly up.

Beau is heavier built, and needs to have a couple of flights left on each wing, or else she would plummet to the floor is she came off her cage. When she first came to me, all her flights had been trimmed, and I was really afraid she was going to get hurt. But fortunately, they grew out enough fairly quickly to allow her to coast down rather than drop down.

Darn ... I got yakking about the wings, and forgot to tell you that I'm happy that Fig is finally with you, Patti, and I hope that everything goes really well for all of you!! I'll be looking forward to hearing all about your experiences with him.

Patti I think I'd bypass doing anthing to his feathers.. he's an amazon right? He needs to be able to glide as heavy as they are...

But I sure would when he's out have the dowell handy and if he gets off the gym when he isn't supposed to then he promptly goes back in his cage...
And be persistant about that and don't show fear..

Hi,
When he flew it was low and long, so maybe your right I should leave them clipped. I could see them today and they looked ok. Yes he is a yellow head amazon. I clip Clouseau - my grey but I follow what the breeder did so he cant fly at all, he goes down about 1 foot. I would like for Fig to go outside but now that he flys 10 ft low I am afraid he can get away. Especially if there is alittle wind in the air I would be so upset if he flew away. Again, he would only be out if we got to the point he would let us let him step up on our hand.

Today, he mumbled all day and when I got home he got real excited and talked, played all nite for all of us. My husband says he must like guys!

Not really sure I will be able to handle that Amazon smell. Tomorrow I have a half day at work so I am going to give him a bath and see then what happens. Smell is not gross, just different - kinda fruity smelling.

As far as quarantining them. I don't have all that much room so he is on the other side of the room. He has not been near Clouseau. Both get jealous when I am talking to one or the other. Kinda cute seeing that Fig has only been here since yesterday.

As far as the mom goes... needless to say she left extemely fast she was upset. She got a speeding ticket only blocks away so this didn't help matters. We will see, time will tell.

My oldest daughter likes the way he talks and interacts with you when you go up to him. Not like Clouseau- he kinda just sits there. Youngest daughter coming home from college tomorrow so she can't wait to see him.

I scrubbed the cage tonight, couldn't handle the mess. Husband and daughter think I am a clean freak! NOT , I just cant stand all that white crap around!

Well talk to you all soon. Thanks for listening(reading).

Patti

Patty firstly they loved showers..... mine will bathe one foot at a time if he has to..

But the smell... Patti he is contented, happy, glad to be with you...
The smell is produced when they are comfortable being around you and I and most really do like that scent...

Oh heck... I was so anxious to tell you that giving the Zon a bath wouldn't take away the smell... that I failed to say how glad I was it is working out and he is happy....

Hi everyone,
Another good day. I washed his cage last nite and the play stand today! I just had to for my own piece of mind.

He flew today and I was sure I could pick him up but still reluctant to do so. So, I walked next to him with a very small dowel and he walked back to his cage. Next time, I am going to tell him to step up on my finger if he seems content enough!

As for the smell...... not sure I like it. I did not know this meant they were content. I am glad to here this. He was so happy again when I came home to say hi to him. I do think within a short time he will be ok with us.

Well, got to go, Just got back from picking up my daughter at college and I am whipped - its 10:16 pm!! Time for bed!

Oh and when I gave him a bath I could see that his wings really are not clipped all that much. One side seems to be more than the other. Boy are the colors underneath this feathers beautiful! Wish I could leave him with all his wings they are so pretty!!

I am surprised at your comment about the scent being strong when they are content, Scots.
I have found that an amazon who is afraid puts off that scent much stronger. Even when excited about something nice it is stronger. I never minded it. I had three at once and the smell was not nearly as obnoxious as when I had one macaw in the house.

If he is like my amazons were, the scent may diminish when he settles in and is calmer.

And I have found the opposite Annie as when mine were happy it almost knocked me over....
Still does and I guess mine weren't afraid... so it can swing both ways then.. I love that smell... so much so I ordered the scent years ago and thought it heavenly.
Am I OK do you think??
and post-note................Annie is NOT included in this survey.

Hi,
Scent can't be to strong as my oldest daughter can't smell it. I do and my husband does. I will ask my youngest and see what she says.
