Hi everyone,
Fig seems to eat more human food than his pellets. I mixed a few zupreem and pretty bird with his pellets (Zupreem(i think) natural white color ones. He has not eaten a small dish in two days. My grey would have this amount gone in one day. Should I be concerned? He is talking, eating- goulash, peppers, salad, grapes, pizza crust, breadsticks but not to much pellets.
I emailed his original mom to see if this is the norm for him as I am use to my Clouseau(grey) eating alot more food (pellets).

Patti

I think as long as the human food don't contain too much salt it should be OK and a well rounded with fresh veggies, or the frozen offered daily will be good... I'm not a big fruit giver, usually it has to be in season, as with mine the fruits have so much sugar they get hyper and hormones and hyper do not mix...
Then they go on pellet binges once in a while but I always have a bowl in their cages..

I agree with Toolady, Patti. Mine eat their Harrisons more for a snack than as their basic food. I make them a cooked mixture of grains, plus they get lots of fresh veggies and some fruit. I don't eat pre-packaged or prepared foods myself because of the salt and fat content, but they do help me eat most of my meals.

Here is an article by David Poole that you might find interesting:
The link to it is (of course, lol) in the Bird Care Articles and Links, on the Bird Article Links page, near the bottom on the link "Inappropriate Nutrition in Parrots".

There is also a link on the Bird Article Links page to an article by Carolyn Swicegood, called "Greening of the Parrot Diet" which is just above the link above.

The link to Carolyn's "greening" article is

Abby may be a while returning due to work so I thought I'd link it for her.

That David Poole article is the one I hunt every time someone seems to be feeding way too many calories.
It's hard to believe that a busy grey only needs 90 to 100 calories daily. I was really surprised. I used to give one Wheat Thin as a treat daily and discovered that one tiny cracker was half of the daily caloric recommendation.

Patti, I would definitely stop the bread stick and pizza crust except maybe a tiny tiny piece weekly. Grapes are very high in sugars and calories when you consider the daily calorie requirements of a bird.

Hi, Fig is a yellow head amazon.
He seems to be eating alittle more pellets these days, but still not that much. His previous owner says he never eat more than 1/2 cup a day and I would say he is eating about 1/8 c now.
