Our baby budgie, Charlie ( 21/2 weeks ) died yesterday  and we didn't know why. Today my sister went in there to check on the other 3 babies and Blueberry ( 2nd youngest ) couldn't move his legs and all 3 of their crops were totally empty. We started trying to feed them baby bird formula and then called the vet. She said to keep doing that until we get there tomorrow. I'm afraid Blueberry won't make it through the night, and we can't handle losing another baby. Any suggestions until we go to the vet tomorrow? We have them in a box with critter care stuff in there with food and water and a heating pad in there. We are letting them take naps and then trying to feed them again. Please help.  Thank you in advance!

Where are the parents to the chicks? In other words the parents aren't feeding?
It is important that the temp stays at least 80 degrees for chicks only 2 1/2 weeks old and keep them away from drafts.....
They need to be syringe fed 8 to 10 cc's of baby bird formula whenever the crop is empty and the feeding formula at least 102-104 temp. this is usually every 3-4 hours.
Feeding baby chicks is not for the inexperienced but since you have no other option I would find a "how to" on the web....
I don't know what critter care is..... but it would be wiser to my way of thinking to use a folded towel or wash rags as a base, changing when necessary...
You will also be able to monitor their poop.
Hopefully the how to feeding site will also give you the ratio of water to formula... Too2

http://pubnix.net/~mhagen/docu/psittac1.html#Food This one has the food preparation water to food ratio, and the nextparagraph tell the methods of feeding . Test the formula on your wrist to make sure it's not too hot, othewise you can burn their crops. Good luck and let us know how they are doing! Nan

We have had to hand feed before. My sister got the youngest to eat quite a bit of the formula, the older 2 have pellets and millet to eat. They also have water. They are doing really well right now, we're so relieved that the little one ate. It was a good thing my sister looked in there when she did, the baby was almost dead! Too bad we didn't see that we had to feed the youngest baby though. The babies were growing fine and everything, the parents just stopped feeding them for no apparent reason. Charlie ( the baby who passed on ) is now with his Grandma L.A. and Uncle Stuart, I know they'll keep him company. We'll see them again one day. Thanks for your help.

If it hasn't been that long since they stopped you can seperate the parents and put babies with DAD watch closely but he will probably start feeding them-they quit feeding and kick out of the nest when they want to nest again.           Katz

I'm glad Nan and Katz jumped in here. I started to look for sitea and see where Nan found some,  then began reading and saw where it suggested as Katz said.. .they are probably ready to go to nest again.....
I am sorry about the loss of the baby chick. It always hurts to loose one.....and we all feel your sorrow ......... Too2

All the babies are doing wonderful. We just fed them again. What are early signs of sour crop? Just to be on the safe side..Does anyone know when Blueberry ( youngest ) should start being able to move his legs again? A friend said he might not be moving them because he is so tired and has no energy. I hope he can start using them soon, I'm afraid the other 2 baby birds will suffocate him because he can't move. Thank you all very much! I really appreciate all your advice.

I hope your babies are doing well.  You might try adding a pinch of Benebac to the formula to help prevent sour crop.

I have hand raised 3 baby budgie's and what I have done is the following
I keep them wrapped in a face cloth that I change at every feeding  ( I wrap them up like a baby)
When I am done feeding I set them in a little container and fold another face cloth over them and leave the face cloth open by thier heads
I  always hold them in thier face cloth until they fall asleep and feed them again when they holler
I always wash thier little butts with warm water and always wash thier little beaks after eating
I feed them sort of how much they want to eat with an eye dropper and baby bird food mixed with warm water to the derections on the bag
And as they got older they  would come out of the face cloth and start standing etc and then it is time to play things by ear and when they got feathers and could stand I tried offerind seeds soaked in water to them mixed with the baby bird food on my fingers so they learn to peck at seeds
This is when it becomes hard to get them to start eating seeds and off the eye dropper and not being rocked to sleep in my hand after a feeding and n ot be wrapped either
I still have one little one who is over a year old that loves being wrapped in a face cloth and held in my hand and rocked to sleep   chemocat
