I got my Parakeet yesterday. It has been really quiet and doesn't move much or play with its toys. But when I get too close to the cage or stick my hand into it he? (I don't know its too young to tell) immediately flies to the farthest courner away from me and when i get to close it bites me (hard). It also hasn't touched its food or water. Is this normal for a new bird? I am getting sort of worried. Also, what would you recomend to training my Parakeet. How do I tame it? I hope you can help

Hi Kris, congradulations on choosing a budgie, they make wonderful pets.  Your birds will feel strange and scared for a while.  I usually offer millet hung in the cage for new birds.  Millet is not as healthy as the seeds but it is a good way to have them eat and start to feel comfortable with their new surroundings.  Also try placing pieces of apple in the cage bars or a piece of  romaine lettuce (budgies love lettuce).

Biting is usually a fear factor, so I would go slow and just start by sitting next to the cage and talking quitely with your new bird then as time goes on try placing your hand in the cage and not moving it so the bird adjust to the presence of your hand and learns that it is not a threat to it.  Eventually you can leave the door open and it will feel confident to come out.

I breed baby budgies and clip the wings of my babies.  You may want to have the wings clipped, this does not hurt the bird and can help in training it.  When it flies it will quickly guild to the floor and is easier to retrieve then if it is fully flighted.

Go slow and I am sure it will develope into a wonderful pet.

Gail

Thanks for the Tips. I think I must have been a little over worried and Lemon (thats what I called her) was simply not used to her surroundings yet. I'm actually surprised how well it went compared to some of the stories I have read on this site where the getting to know each other process takes months. Its bin 5 Days now and Lemon is perfectly happy with sitting on my finger or my shoulder. The apple pieces didn't really work but I think thats because she isn't really used to eating greens. She eventually just started eating on her own. Thanks again.
