Can anyone tell me where i can buy a new 18 inch wood perch for my jeepers cage.  He has two.  But the upper one he has almost chewed through in one spot.
The bird store only has branches.  And I want just the plain wood perch with the little slots on the end that fit into the cage wire.

I dont know if you have a petsmart in your area. I got some plain wood perches there a few weeks ago. They have everything. We have to drive 40 minutes out of town but its worth it when you cant find that one thing you really need!

You can also go to a hardware store or Wally World to buy dowels of the right size, and cut them to fit.  Notch the ends with a saw blade and you have a custom-made perch that's cheap enough to replace as often as they get chewed through.

Regular smooth wooden dowels (often included in cages because they are cheap) are not really all that great for birds.

Birds need natural perches with variation in the diameter of the perch. The surface should be either somewhat rough or grooved IMHO.

If I can't find a good deal on them.... (I got 3 for $8.00 over the weekend at the Bird Fair,  Ms Sherry helped me attach 6 in the flight), I cut and make my own....... usually branches from fruit/safe tree's. I'll wash, rinse a few times, spray down with a weakened bleach solution and air dry in the sun...... Drilling the hole is simple as is attaching the screw ...... those I buy similar to the ones that come in the ceiling hooks where one end is sharp the other flat, usually the nut is included or purchase the wing nut separate.....
Since it may be difficult at this time of the year for some to bake outdoors in full sunlight, the branches then can be "baked" in the oven for a few hours on a low temp......Too2

The branches are much better for their feet than the dowels. My feed store here has manzanita in every size and that's what I use for one perch. The I use regular safe branches for another so they can chew it up.

I use a few of each for my birds, except for the tiel. Pepper freaks completely if I try putting anything that looks like a branch anywhere near his cage! So, I have a dowel perch for him, a plastic perch, and a branch that is peeled and almost straight, so he THINKS it isn't a branch.

Sage, the special needs white-eared conure, has two pieces of branch that have been sanded to be flat on the top (and smooth so they don't hurt her feet, although I have strips of rawhide wrapped around parts of them), a box made out of pine that she sleeps in (but also sits in the entrance of occasionally), and a swing with a really skinny dowel (about 1/4") that Murray made for her. She doesn't use the swing a lot, but every once in a while she perches there for a bit. It's just barely above the bottom of her cage, so if she missteps she won't really fall.

She also has old placemats in the bottom of her cage to help her walk around over the bars, otherwise her poor little legs would go right between the bars!

Abby
