HI. I got my budgie (Ling) a few months ago, and he was very friendly by the second week or so. But recently (in the last few weeks), he's started biting me. He hasnt drawen blood or anything. I try to coax him out of his cage with spray millet, which he loves, but he wont budge! I dont want to hurt him, so im not trying to put my hands around him (or grab him) too much. I think he might be getting scared of me all of a sudden, because he's not as scared of my dad. How do I tell him that I dont wanna hurt him? I got him a new toy, but i dont think that its very smart to bribe him. Also, what treats can i give him? It might make him happier. he seems kinda depressed and aggresive. thanks!

Hi Yaelibelly,
Congratulations on your budgie, they are very sweet birds. I found a site that has lkoads of information on hand taming. My only suggestion would be to make sure his wings are clipped. It's much easier to handle them that way. I hope these articles help. Nan

Excellent article, Nan.  Certainly worth following from A to Z.

Whenever a bird has a sudden change in behavior, I always recommend a trip to the avian vet to rule out physical causes.  Another concern I have with budgies is the cage size.  Too often they're kept in cages soo small that only a fake ivy could survive comfortably in one.  And, of course, near the top of the priority list is the learned fear of hands.  Picking up a budgie with the hand around the body is terrifying to them since that is the way a predator grabs them to devour them.

Yael, I hope you will run a copy of all of the data in the articles Nan left for you and use that information as your "bible" of budgie socialization and training.  Let us know how this all works out for you.
