A long time ago I mentioned that a friend found a blue jay that had fallen out of the nest and raised it. Anyways....Saw her daughter at the grocery store the other day so of course had to ask if she still had the BJ....which she did. Now she has had this bird for at least 2 years now and swears that it says "hello". Possible???  Haven't heard it myself but also haven't been over there for awhile. Bonnie's hubby is crazy about the BJ but they also have a Goffins Cockatoo and a Timneh Grey. Deb

Hmmm, Blue Jays are related to crows and some tame crows talk.
Could be......Annie

I can't remember where I read it, but I believe I have heard that jays can also talk.

Well since I am really into folklore--the saying a little bird told me originated because people in simpler times thought birds listened and then told secrets. There always seems to be some grain of truth in these things.          Katz

That is fascinating- I did not know BJ's, or Crows for that matter, could talk.

Katz- you commented on folklore....  I have this book titled something to the effect of "Why People Say What They Say", giving the origins of various slang terms & cliches, etc.   Very interesting.  But I have not been able to find the origins of "Flying by the seat of my pants" or "Winging it".  Do you (or anyone) know how those sayings came to be ??  Just curious.

LOL...yup..lots of wild birds can talk the human language.  I had one that was halfway in rehab and took to ringing like the telephone...had me running all the time.  I've also had starlings and mockingbirds talk too.  It's kinda erie to hear those voices out there after you've released them!  Can you just imagine a bunch of fids that make the microwave beep and the telephone ring sound getting away?  All those beeping and ringing trees out there..heeeeehehehe

Yep, I subscribe to a message board for people who own starlings(I have 2), one lady has a BlueJay & he talks alot.
My starlings say more words & speak more clearly than any parrot I've ever heard...including my YN amazon(go figure).
