We just got Jingles a black headed caique for Christmas.  He loves meat. How much is too much?  I feed him a mixture of seeds with pellets along with fresh fruits and veggies. I feed him two times a day.  How much should he be eating?  He's approx 5 months old.

Hi Kreppie!!!  Congrats on the new baby!! Meat should be used spareingly, it should only be a treat every now and then. Use lean meats like chicken, fish and turkey, try to stay away from the sausage and heavy meats but every now and then, very now and then you can give those in very small amounts. I know he probably begs for the meat (mine like meat too) but you can look at it this way too, they are like kids and candy, a basket full of candy on one side and a basket full of spinach on the other, which do you think a kid will pick?? even tho YOU know the spinache is better for the kid, they will take the candy every time, so it is up to you to make him eat the good for him stuff too!  Ollie

Kreppie,  I agree with Ollie about the meat--a little bit is Ok, a lot is not.
I can hardly wait to hear about Jingles' personality.  Need pics, too.
If your question about how much he should be eating means how much seed and pellets--I have no idea.  A caique is a high energy, fast moving bird so he probably will eat a bit more in relation to his body size than one of my sedentary birds.  Can you call the breeder and ask about amounts?  You could visually measure how much you give him daily for a few days, try to estimate how much he actually ate--deducting the spilled and tossed food, and you may be able to come up with a pretty close estimate so he doesn't waste a lot.
Personally, I give them a little more than they can eat daily.  I'd rather waste a little than have the bird hungry if I was ever delayed in feeding them.

Hey, managers.  I forgot which board I was on.  Sorry about the link.  (It is a good one, though.)

Hi Everyone
thanks for the rapid response to my questions about feeding meat to my caique.  Jingles is just soooo sweet and cuddly.  He loves hanging out with me...playing with rawhide strings, hanging upside down, spinning and of course hopping around.  although he doesnt always hop sometimes he just walks.

He does a wolf whistle now (we didnt teach him that , he must have picked it up from while at the breeders ) and now he seems to be ? saying or whistling Uh ohhhh...because i say that alot as in "uh ohhhh, here comes the dog!"

I've read some caiques can speak.  Does anyone have one that speaks? I just love him he is so different from my five lovebirds!! (started with just two lovebirds...seems they are really in love....if you know what i mean.  she's sitting on four eggs right now)

what site should i go to when discussing Jingles?  For instance there is a designated Lovebird site etc...
thanks again!
