Hello! I am a new proud Cockatiel owner. We got Nelli the day before Thanksgiving and I am trying to learn all about them. I am interested in chatting w/ other Cocketiel owners. I would like to hear about what kind of food your bird eats and stories. Nelli is very loveable and socialable. Nelli tugged at our heart strings the second he spotted us! I read that Cockatiels whistle and can say few phrases. I hope ours talks to us soon. HEHEHE Nelli nows whistles when he wants our attention or doesn't see us. It is close to what we have been whistling. It's so cute. I was told Nelli is about 6 months old. I have so many questions and would love to share chat's or emails about raising our new addition to the family!

Congratulations.  You're going to get a new kind of lovin.
     20 lovebirds, 2 cockatiels and I share a home.
My yellow cockatiel, jonTiel, is most perfect.  The grandest of his species and he knows it; proud, stately & sophisticated a prince he is.  He says "dont't bite" as he puts his beak between my first two fingers to get me to shake his head side to side.  He learned this when I first got him and to try to teach him I valued every portion of my lower lip I took his beak & shook it....not hard, loosely, but with command.  He enjoyed my "punishment" so much he now never bites my lip but, as I said, puts his beak between my fingers and requests more "punishment" with "don't bite."  He loves to sit on my shoulder or hand but does not want to be covered or cuddled.  He also sings one word "America" at to top of his voice and off key.
Millison is pearl gray and was rescued from a trash can where she was left to die when she was a baby.  She is very plain, sweet and loving.  She only has one leg that works right and one wing droops but the vet says she is healthy and I know she is happy.  Her eyes are really big.  When I first got her I wrapped her in a blanket and held her constantly.  She still loves her blanket and is and olympic cuddler.  Loves a good head rub and she makes sweet sounds.  Her only words are "so good, you are so good, sooooo good."  Seems to know when I need to hear that.  She is such a treasure.
If I can answer any question I will gladly try.  I also know a breeder with extensive knowledge.  Their favorite food is apples.  No seeds.  Mine prefer them in thin round slices and they want them hung or clipped to the side of their home...not put in their seed bowl.

Welcome, Jen.  There are lots of good articles on the sidebar and in some of the listings under "General" on bird care, nutrition, etc. etc.  Finding a competent avian vet is very important so you can take your bird for his/her wellness check-up, if you haven't already done so.

Cockatiels pack a lot of charm and personality and love into their little bodies.  I'll bet you're wondering why you waited so long to add one to your life.  Drop by often and let us know how things are going.
