Hi! Does anyone have a brownheaded african? I have one here in Finland, and I've never seen another. My Coco is friendly for me but like a hawk for the others... I also have a yellowcrested cockatoo, very gentle, and 4 cocatiels. If someone has a brownheaded, it would be nice to hear what kind it is! Are they aggressive or is mine the only one? (And why?) How can I change Cocos attitude? Is it true that when parrots are much together (their cages are in the same room) they dont learn to speak so easily?

Hi Aila, I had not heard of a Brownheaded Parrot so I looked for info. You have a very rare bird, apparently.
Here's a description but doesn't mention aggressiveness with other pet birds.
Maybe someone else here at BB has one. Hope they see this.
Annie

Hi Annie,
I have a Brown Headed Parrot. Her name is Tegan and she is 2 and a half years old. They can be rather aggressive with other birds if they are very bonded to you. They are better in a one bird home but Tegan does very well here with the rest of my flock. She gets along better with the smaller birds like Cockatiels. She is very lovable with me and her best friend is a rescued Sparrow we have had for almost a year. The Sparrow came to us as a tiny baby that I handfed and now is a member of the family. She flies free in the house and thrives very well by eating from everyones seed dish and also eats fresh foods twice a day. Brown Headed Parrots are not what I would call talkers but they can imitate the sounds of other birds such as Tiels and Conures.
Hope this helps..
Amy

Hi Aila,

I have seen a few Brown-Headed Parrots in person. They seem to be very simlar in size to my Senegals.

Here is a link to some more information and photos on the species... http://www.wingscc.com/aps/brown.htm

You may also consider joining the African Parrot Society's "Poicephalus email list" at the bottom left side of thier webpage at : http://www.wingscc.com/aps/poicep.htm

Just click on "Poicephalus Email List" . I feel certain there are quite a few owners of Brown-Headed Parrots there.

Poicephalus are known to be somehwat strong-headed and even bossy. Your did not mention how old your Brown-Headed is or if this behavior started recently or if it has been going on for a long time. I know that my Senegals can be very sweet for months and then later get aggressive and nippy again, then change back to their old sweet selves again. Poicephalus birds in general get bonded to one person and I know that my Senegals will "protect" me from others. Almost like they are jealous of others being near me.

Sorry for the long post. I hope you find more information from the site that I suggested.

Thanks,

TW

Hi, and thanks! I looked those photos, and yes, Coco is brownheaded. My bird has little yellow on the top of the wings. It's true that those beautiful glitterin "metal"colors are not seen in the photos. I always say to Coco that he(?) is beautiful, but his spareparts must be expensive because of the rare color... I bought Coco about 2 years ago, and the girl who sold it, told me that she had bought it 3 years eariler. She was told that the bird was about 3 years old. So Coco is about 8 years old. I hope that Coco must never move again! In the earlier home he had been sometimes aggressive too. He has a funny habit... Before he begins to play with me he shows with his leg that I have to scrub him from his neck. So I give him a massage and then he is happy. When I scrub him our cockatoo makes as much noise as it can. He's so jealous. I can't let them be free at the same time if I don't look after them all the time. I'll try to put a photo, but let's see if I succeed. I hope that someone of you understands something of my letter!!!

Aila, We understand every word you write. If English is not your first language, you do really well with it.
I'll watch for a pic of Coco. Cute name for a brown headed bird.

You did great at attaching the photo and a very pretty one, too. He's a cutie.

Hi Aila,
Your letters are just fine. Tegan has a funny habit as well. She will do a little dance and hoot in a high pitch tone for me then i scratch her head and she loves it. She is always trying to feed me too..LOL
I like your name as well, my daughter has a friend with the same name.

LOL Maya, I don't have every one but close..LOL I have had different birds in the past than I do now but even now I have a wide variety of birds. I have 15 Amazons and they are, 1 Mealy, 5 Red Loreds, 2 DYH, 2 OWA, and 2 White Fronts and 3 Yellow Napes. I also have 9 Conures, they are 4 Suns, 1 White Eyed, 1 Blue Crown and 1 Nanday , a Yellow sided and a Cinnamon. I also have a Brown Headed Parrot and a Red Bellied Parrot and a Sparrow. I live with my best friend who has Cockatiels, Indian Ring Necks, Love Birds, Finches and Parrotlets. She also has a Peach Front Conure and a King Parrot. We are also fostering a Citron Cockatoo until the spring.
Yes we have many birds in the house but to see this house and all the birds together it does not look like it. They are a lot of work which I feel is worth every busy moment. I'll have to upgrade my photo album and put new pictures in there.
I hope to be moving into my own place very soon but it will seem like I have a whole lot less to do with out caring for my friends birds as well as mine.
