Greetings fellow members,

All is not well in the Princess' realm.

While her food is being prepared in the morning, she is doing her best to bite the preparer. Any part of the neck or ears will do. And these are not play bites.

When the room where her cage stays is entered, she flies at the intruder, wacking her really hard in the head. The intruder is none other than her companion of twenty-six years.

I've learned to duck when going into to the cage room (also my bedroom), but the morning chewing sessions are starting to get old and very annoying.

Any advice or suggestions?

The Princess' Mother
Barbara

Hey Barbara, good to see you.

Yep, get that little cranky Princess off your shoulder!! She is probably hormonal and could take out an eye quite easily.
No kidding, this is exactly why so many of us tell everyone to stop with the shoulder perching early in the birdie-human relationship.  I know it's comfy to be able to work with them up there, but eventually nearly all of us get the big facial bite, and some folks lose an eye at the same time.
Maybe try leaving her in the cage while you prepare food and tell her the biting has to stop. They understand a lot, so it could work.
Drop by more often.
Annie

Is green cheek another name for red lored amazon? Miss Sadie is a red lored and she's been grumpier than usual.

Do you have an extra cage you could use as a time out place ? I hate to use their own cage for that as a cage should be a refuge and a home. If she bites put her in for about 5 minutes or so. Tell her biting is bad. And I would keep her in her cage at feeding time too, as that should be a pleasent time for her.Zons can be stinkers but I love em!
It is good to see you! Do come back and post more! Nan

I think greencheek is the same as Mexican redhead, isn't it?

Yep it is unfortunately that time of year for the hormones to rise.  There are times that I cannot even take Allegra out of his cage!!!  Please for your safety and hers clip her wings!!  Nothing worse than a hormonal amazon flying at your face.  It has been in my experience that there is really nothing you can do about hormonal amazons other than just try to understand.  Sorry I cant be of any help.

The easiest thing of all is to prepare her meal before she arises--is this an option? Have everything ready and in her dish before her cage is uncovered or she is out. Marion. Sounds too simple so there must be a hitch....

Dear 1GoodBird,

Unless she has an extraordinary makeup artist, she is most definitely an Amazon. Thanks for replying. This behavior has been going on for years, but it seems that at age fifty-seven I don't have my old levels of patience and tolerance of birdie cuteness.
