I read that African Grey's should be in a wider, rather than taller, cage.  The cage that I got with Max is more taller than it is wider, and he really doesn't even use the bottom.  In the next few months I want to get him a new cage, what width should I be looking for?

Tina, in the bird world it is recommended that you provide your bird the biggest cage you can afford.  Most cages available are tall rather then wide.
However, you can help your bird utilize the whole thing by using perches to add levels to his home.  Providing different toys at these levels will help too.  This also helps in that they tend to move around more.....from perch to perch.  The rope types are my favorites in that they can be positioned from top to bottom and the birds utilize muscles to climb.  The short wood types are good for filling in the gaps.  There are so many different perches available today that you'll have an easy time making his home fun and functionable!

I said on another post somewhere that my greys are in a macaw cage... placing different perches does help, having a bucket of foot toys at the bottom also helps, and placing different things of interest at different levels makes a huge difference. They also have areas that things are placed so if they want to feel closed around and protected, they can.
Each grey is different, and each responds differently. Mine are pretty laid back, but they have had a wide variety of spaces since they were chicks.

I have a food bowl at the bottom of his cage, and 2 pirches....he's slowly getting used to being on the bottom.  I have 3 kids that run around like crazies...he used to get scared being at their level on the bottom, but he seems to be doing better :)  I want to get him a bigger cage, well, wider, but I guess for now, he's fine :)

thanks!

I have a ladder down to the bottom.  He goes down to get fallen toys and carries them back up.
