Anyone know the gestation period for a female vos eclectus?  Noelle is 3 and at her last home she was with a male that we THOUGHT she didnt like much, but now she is nesting and ripping up and piling any paper she can get her beak on!  Any suggestions, we just want to be prepared for the possibility!

Jen

Hi Jen,  with my finches, there's only about a 2 week period after the female has been with a male where the eggs can be fertile.  And the percentage goes down as the time between the encounter and the first egg being laid is greater.  I'm going to assume the same is true for eclectus.  So, although Noelle might surprise you with an egg or two, I don't think you have to worry about any babies at this point.  Since I've only got a male ekkie, I can't help you out with the nesting behavior, but it is getting to be that time of year.  There's lots of folks here that can give you good advice on what to do for Noelle to help with this hormonal surge.                    Nancy

Hi Jen,  My Vos ekkie is doing the paper shredding now, too.  I looked for an answer to the fertilization time and didn't find it.  I would think that sperm couldn't possibly be viable more than a couple of days.
You got Noelle for Christmas didn't you?  (Aren't I bright?) I don't think there is any chance eggs laid now could be fertile after that long time alone.
Diana was very late in reaching her first hormone period due to illnesses.  She began a couple of months ago at almost 6 years old.
Be sure Noelle's calcium intake is adequate for an egglayer.
I had to get vet advice when my pionus became a chronic egglayer.  Changed her entire lifestyle.
Hopefully these ekkies don't want to be a Mama as badly as my Maxi does.
