I've read that parrots are not self-aware -- they don't recognize themselves in the mirror -- they think it is another bird.  I have been working with Dude when we look in the big mirror after shower time -- I point at his reflection and say Dude and my reflection and say Mama and then at Dude himself and say Dude and at myself and say Mama and repeat the whole process a couple of times.  Of course, all the while Dude just looks at me like I'm nuts.

But then last week down in Florida -- just before I left DH & Dude there -- Dude was on my wrist and we passed by the downstairs mirror and he said:  'HELLO MR. DUDE' to his reflection.  Of course it could be a fluke or coincidence -- but have any of you ever experienced your bird recognizing themselves in the mirror?

I think it's 50/50 about awareness as I used to have a couple of little MM2's that would hop on the floor and run around a large full length mirror I had looking for the birds in the mirror!
I've had such fun with birds and mirrors especially when some were not self aware... They had the crest up racing along the back of the couch, neck stretched high to get a glimpse of whoever was racing with them
I did have one that was very aware. When I was a teenager taking a university class in the evening our bus stop was by a large building that rented rooms to American stationed on the local base? They always played “country?I didn’t know what it was at the time but I really enjoyed one song and the only words I could make out were “hey good lookin.?and so I’d sing those words with a bird on my shoulder while getting ready for school. Sweet Pea picked it up and associated those words anytime we passed by her reflection?I just thought it was great she could speak English…she never otherwise used that expression.
My female U2 Jasmine was so in love with her reflection in the mirror she would push me aside just to tell herself “what a pretty bird.?I told her that often but never when she saw herself in the mirror? She must have known it was herself looking back?
