Not the best picture but I have never seen one before and felt so lucky just to see this bird at all.I believe it is a female.

Very cool, Abeau ... thank you for sharing! I'm sure glad you were able to get this one. I've really missed you being able to share your pictures since your shoulder was injured!

That's a great pic.  Lucky you....I had woodpecker suet and other stuff out last winter, and I have it out now.  Starlings enjoy it, but I've never had a woodpecker.

Thank you for sharing the woodpecker picture Abeau!  I would love to feed the woodpeckers, but they reject the suet and would rather peck on my house instead!  Kathy

I have a tip for everybody about suet. The starlings prefer the (commercial) suet but the woodpeckers very much prefer the suet in it's natural state-beef fat found in the meat department in you're grocery store.
The stuff you get in preshaped blocks really attracts those starlings(and boy can they leave a mess behind).
I have never seen the woodpeckers touch that stuff when there is plain old beef fat around.
I hope it helps to attract the woodpeckers to you're feeders because they are such a joy to watch.

Thanks for the tip Abeau.  I think that woodpeckers are so cool, it would be nice to see them up close and personal.  I have all the stuff to make the home made dough (lard, flour, peanut butter, cornmeal), but just haven't done it yet.  Next time to the grocery store I'll get some beef fat and see what happens.  Kathy
