Hey all,

After another traumitizing time of getting Punkin' back into the cage, I think I've decided to at least try to train him to step on a stick or something.  I hate having to chase him and scare 'im to peices if I need to get him back in the cage before he goes in there on his own.

My flock consists of Pickles and Punkin', two male lovies who share a cage and Toby, a parrotlet in his own cage.  My living situation has finally let me allow the birds to be flighted without danger.  I let them out for about an hour or two a day, most days, to fly around the livingroom.

Pickles is the most tame and is a velcro bird.  Toby, who I've had a little over a year, is pretty tame too.  He'll step up, sit on my finger a bit to chat...  Punkin' I've had a year this coming November, and though he's not that tame, he does enjoy being around me a lot more than he did at first.  He'll come land on my arm and hang out, land on my head...  I just can't touch him with my hands.  This is fine, except when  I have to catch him.

I'm thinking I should clip him and get him used to stepping up on a stick first, and then possibly to my hand.  He needs to at least be a little tame so getting him in the cage isn't so traumitizing for the poor guy.

What do you think?  How should I go about this?  Will it be too much for him if I leave the others flighted?  Thanks...

JL

I would clip his wings so when you need to get him he can't be flying around and make harder for you to get him and more stressful on the both of you.

I also would clip him. Only do it yourself if you are certain you know where to do the clip. They can be permanently injured with a bad clip.
I think lovies are one of the hardest birds to get to sit still. My pair were impossible to calm down. I had them before the days of enough information to tell me the way to do things. I had to catch them in a net. My room was so big and had over 200 plants for them to hide in. Big mistake on my part in putting them in that room.
Good luck.

Thanks guys...  Hey, the net actually doesn't sound like a bad idea either.  I'm thinking I won't really be able to get anywhere with trying to hand tame him, as he is at least two years old.  He was never hand tamed and I think starting now would be difficult.

I bet a lot of people will disagree with using the net but it was my only option. I gave those birds to a neighbor and one day when they were out on top of a room divider her kids opened the door and out the birds went. My heart broke but she didn't seem concerned. It was snowy that day.

Clipping his wings will probably fix 90% of the problem
