This kinda goes along the same lines as what west coast mom wrote, but it is slightly different and I would be apprecitive of any advice I might get. I need help!!!! I have an eight month old lovebird, JoJo, that was hand fed and raised that I got from a breeder. We have had him since before he could even sit on a perch and has turned out to be a very sweet bird. He loves to be held and loves attention. We decided to get him a mate (hopefully we now have a boy and a girl). JoJo is a peachface and our new bird, Ocean, is blue and white and grey with purple on his tail. Not sure what kind he is. Ocean is only two months old and is not very tame yet, we got him from a pet store at 1 month old. He never shuts up, while JoJo is a very quiet bird.

Anyways, JoJo is bigger and picks on Ocean anytime they are near. JoJo has tried to peck at or around Oceans eyes and has bite Ocean on the toes several times that have made Ocean chirp in pain. We have been doing supervised visits with them. I hold JoJo and let Ocean come over and visit and kiss on JoJo, since Ocean is very fond of JoJo. I keep JoJo from hurting Ocean while Ocean can play with JoJo. Is this the right way to go about it? Ocean is a much smaller bird and has bigger feet and a bigger beak than JoJo, even though he is younger. We think JoJo is the female and Ocean is the male due to the size difference and aggressiveness of JoJo. I have them is seperate cages and right next to each other so hopefully they will take to each other better. It is a shame because Ocean loves JoJo to death, but JoJo just tries to hurt Ocean. Any and all help will be appreciated. Thank you, Jim

For now I would just keep their cages side by side and let them interact by chattering away to each other.Jojo is a lot older than your other bird and he may be jealous of the time you spend with Ocean. I'm not sure when Lovebirds become sexually mature but Jojo will before Ocean. Don't try to force them to like each other let it happen naturally. Nan

Thanks Nan,
I appreciate your advice. I am still doing supervised visits. I hold JoJo while I let Ocean walk over and love on JoJo, just to keep JoJo from being to mean. I really hope JoJo will take to Ocean soon. Lovebirds are just so beautiful! I think sometimes they should be called hate birds the way they act, but they are fun and beautiful! Thanks again, Jim

HAHAHA!!!  Hatebirds!!!!!  I've heard people say that they're mean before....great pets, but mean to each other.  They are beautiful, perfect little birds aren't they.  I don't have any, but I've always admired them.  They have all the beauty of a large bird, but compact and quiet enough to have anywhere.
