Hello,
I'm new to the group and this a bit of a long story so I will try to keep it short. My neighbor found a lovebird under her truck the other day.  It's all yellow except for the peach face.  The day it was found it was very nice and did not bite or anything just little nibbles.  I believe it was tired and hungry and just didn't want to fight.  It's been about 4 days now and this bird will not let me handle it all now  It will let me pick it up but then proceeds to bite the heck out of me.   It is rather dirty and I guess I would say greasy.  It has cleaned itself a little bit, but still greasy.  I'm not sure what is on its feathers as it has no odor or color and leaves my hands greasy, but am wondering if it could be harmful to the bird?  Is there anyway I can help clean it up without loosing a couple fingers?  I have another green peach face that I bought from a breeder a couple years ago and he is very sweet (at least I think its a boy).  I have them in separate rooms at this time because I thought it would be even harder to tame this new bird if they are too close.  I can't really get another mate for it as my landlord will not allow it, but I don't want it be lonely, yet I'm afraid to put it with Harry (my sweet one).  Does anyone have any suggestions for this new bird.   Sorry for the novel.

Your novel is excellent because it tells us needed info to try to help you.  First, do keep the new bird away from your bird, because a bird that has come from anywhere else could have a disease that your bird can catch. A bird found outdoors could even have mites.
Try putting a bowl in his cage with about 1 inch of water. Maybe he will know to bathe. Don't use any cleaning products.  It may take a few baths for him to look and feel better. If he will not bathe in a bowl, try spraying him with a new spray bottle.  Not one that has had any kind of chemical in it.  If he seems frightened of the spray, let him settle down for a day before trying it again.
Hope this works out well.  He sounds very pretty.
Many lovies are nippy.  Give him time to get to know you.
Annie

I've always heard that keeping two luvvies together can make them bond to each other and not want YOU anymore.  To keep your lil sweetie greenie nice, you should keep them apart even after a quarenteen.   I hope she cleans up nicely, those little yellow ones are soooooo cute!  Luckeeeeeeeee! teehee.  Good luck and keep us posted how it goes with her.  She might stop biting you once she learns to trust  you.

Congratulations to all three of you; to heck with the landlord. I've never met a lovebird who didn't love me... eventually. May I suggest that you place a small terry cloth towel on top of the bird, then tuck it under his/her body. Pick up the little bundle & pull back the cloth from just his/her face. Cuddle up. Talk soft. Go slow. Hold him/her for a long time. No telling what it's been through out there. Being bundled up is comforting to them; like being under their mommy I think The terry may help a little with the soiled feathers. If you are cautious you won't get bitten. Stroke him/her with the cloth. After a while you can start to rub his/her head, then its beak. You'll be gettn kisses in the morning.

Thank you everyone who has replied.  I put dish of water today and it looks like she cleaned up a little bit.  I will try the terrycloth idea and let you know how it goes.  She seems to be pretty healthy but I will most likely make a vet appt in the next few days just to be sure. I'm off to get some new toys for the two of them!  Thanks for all the suggestions.
