hi im new to this group! I have a lovebird with a problem! She eats and drinks normally, acts cheerful, but prunes her neck alot! Is this normal: when she prunes her neck (she never pulls feathers out just appears to be scratching her shoulders or running her beak through her feathers around her neck) i can see her shoulders and they are red. Could it be mites? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks so much! -Nikole |

Your best bet for an answer to this is to take your bird to your avian vet for evaluation. He/she can determine whether the bird has mites, or an allergy, or a skin condition, etc. I would make the appointment right away and while I waited to get in for that office visit, I would do two things. First, I would hold the bird in my hand and riffle through it's feathers. If I saw teeny, tiny, minutely-small little black or red dots, I would be suspicious. And next, I would be sure to give the bird a nice, warm spritz bath. But I would get to the vet's as soon as possible. JMO |

You can use a white cloth to brush against the feathers to see if there are mites, but whatever you do don't buy those mite things that you can hang in a cage. It really makes birds ill especially small ones. Your best bet will be your vet. He/she will be able to tell if it's mites or a bunch of other things. They are finding out now that birds do get allergies. Do you smoke by any chance? If you do wash your hands before handling your bird and never smoke around her. Let us know how she is doing. Nan |

thanks for the advice! i dont smoke, so that isnt an issue. she seems to be getting worse, the red bald spots on her shoulders are larger now. the rest of her seems as though she is moulting. I'm not sure what to do as I have yet to see mites in or anywhere near the cage or on the bird. I'm making an appoint with vet |
