My husband and I are wanting to get a hahns macaw. He has always wanted a blue and gold, but we have younger kids and don't have the space for a large macaw. We are waiting for our friend to get a baby in for hand feeding which I am hopping will be soon. We want to learn all we can about them before getting our baby. Any information and pictures would be great.

Michele

Congratulations, Michele ... you are in for a real treat!

I replied to this early this morning, but it went into cyberspace when I hit send. I usually copy a message before I send it, but wouldn't you know, I forgot this time!

Anyway, I have a Hahns Macaw, Beaujolis, who will be 9 years old in August. She was 6-1/2 year old when she came to me. Her owner was rehoming her as he had changed jobs and was away from home a lot. So ... I don't have any experience with a baby Hahns, just an adult one.

Beau is my "velcro bird". I'm sure she would be happy to be on me every waking minute! lol  But she accepts it when I put her on or in her cage, and tell her that I have to give Basil, Sage or Pepper a turn, or whatever the reason is.

When she first came to me she was eating only pellets, and would not even think of eating anything else. She now loves the cooked grain mix I make for them, and enjoys cooked veggies as well. She still isn't keen on raw veggies, but will occasionally eat a bit of them.

She also didn't know how to play with toys, and didn't chew! She was the first bird I have ever known that didn't want to chew anything it could get it's beak on. She will now chew up paper and cardboard, and will even gnaw a bit on soft wood.

She is a cuddly, sweet and lovable girl, and I can hold her any which way with no protest from her. I can scritch under her wings, and she will lie on her back in one hand, and let me scritch her tummy. Her vet loves examining her, and says she's never had such a co-operative patient. She says that normally she has to towel a bird to give her a complete examination, but not my Beau! lol

I'm sure others will be along to reply to you, as several of our members have a Hahns. If you have any specific questions, please ask!

I'm really looking forward to hearing all about your baby and seeing pictures of him/her as well!

These pictures were taken soon after Beau came to me over two years ago. I'll try to get some new ones soon.

I don't know how long it will be before we get our hahns. It has been a while since our friends had on in their store. She said she will be looking for one for us. There is a breeder here that has some, but they are not good breeders. There is a large group of avian breeders here that are just in it for the money and so there are always problems with the birds they produce. I just hope we don't have to wait too long. We already have a cage for him/her. Just need to get some new perches, toys and food bowls. I am working on moving things around to get a spot for the cage too.

I adopted my hahns(Simon) from an animal shelter over a year ago. He was a lost bird that nobody claimed. I dont know his age at all..He was blood tested male. He was nervous of course when we first brought him home. My hubby and I can both handle him anytime. He doesnt want us to scratch his head. We can tickle him under his wing and pet him a little on his back. He does seem to be a sensative bird. He is only vocal in the am and when he wants to go to sleep he yells goodnight till we take him to the birdroom and cover him.

He doesnt play with toys much either. Doesnt destroy things like you think parrots normally do. We just love him! We adopted a DYH from a rescue who we have had for a couple months. He is adjusting well. There are many wonderful birds in rescue too.

We were adopted by the lovely Miss Lilo about 2 years ago, we got her when she was just 4 months old, her owners had decided that she was too noisy and took too much time up.... So we gave them £100 and took Lilo and her cage and she has been velcro'd to my husband ever since..

She is a lovely little bird, could live without her, when I get in from work I have to  kiss the bird, fuss the dog and finally kiss the husband, if I don't kiss her first she sulks at me all night...

You will love your little one and they are sooooo much fun.

Hi Michele,

I got my Hahn's a year ago in August. She chose me! I was at a bird fair/seminar in St. Louis, MO.

While I was looking through the breeders stack of Bird Talk back issues a little parrot flew to my chest. I put the little stinker back with her siblings and playmates and went back to the magazines. Zip the little stinker was back, this happened three times. I went to the next vendor, about 20 feet away and Zip the little stinker found me, my friend tried to get her off of me and she tried to bite her, I went back to the breeders table so she could get her off of me, she actually bit the breeder.

My friend said that maybe I was destined to have this parrot, so I bought her, then had to buy a triple cage to accomodate her and the other parrots at home.

I had her blood tested when I got home, Mackenzie aka Big Mack is a girl and she is my Velcro bird.
