Hi everyone!

My husband and I just bought a baby Greenwing Macaw! He's only about 62 days - still on three feedings a day. I am a very paranoid person so I'm always worried that he's sick. He sneezes probably once a day that we hear. Maybe once every other day. He doesn't have anything in his nose (except for a tiny bit of residue formula that got in there), his nose isn't runny, etc. I think I hear him "wheeze" every now and then but my husband swears he doesn't. I think I might have it in my mind that he is wheezing because I am so paranoid. We haven't taken him to the avian vet because it is a 2 hour drive. My question is does he sound sick and should I just bite the bullet and drive the 2 hours each way?

Thank you in advance!
Deanna

The wheezing concerns me.  Have you handfeed a baby bird before?  You can aspirate a bird when handfeeding if the food goes down to the lungs.   This is a very serious problem. I don't want to alarm you but they can eventually die from this.

You really should take him to the vets.  They will do an xray.  My one grey took a seizure and we thought she aspirated.  She was wheezing. She did ended up staying at vets for 5 days though.

I would get to vets if I were you.

I am not paranoid. My birds sneeze occasionally just like we do to clear the dust that accumulates in the nasal passages.
It scares me to tell you not to take him to the vet but could he be mimicking a sound he hears? One of mine did that ans scared me half to death.
Can you positively say that he has never choked, even a tiny bit, while feeding? If you can be certain he hasn't, I'd wait a day or so. On the other hand, as concerned as you are, maybe bite the bullet and head out.

Are you giving him any food in a bowl yet? They can really get messy and some may get stuck in the nares.

I also drive 2 + hours to the vet. What a mess, but we have to sometimes.
Please let us know what you do and what the vet says if you go.

The wheezing is what made me say go to the vets.  Allie did the wheezing when she had her episode.  Sneezing I would think occaisonally without any liquid discharge is no biggy.  They do that to clear their nose.  Unless food hardens in there it shouldn't be a prob.

Like Annie said they do mimick noises but if you set him on a perch and you really see any hard breathing or tail bobbing I would be concerned.  Call your vet and explain to him he should tell you what to do and watch for.  Allies wheezing was very noticeable.

Any hardened food in his mouth?  I use to have to clean inside her beak after I handfed her so nothing remained to harden.

Thanks for your recommendations!

The breeder showed us how to feed her (just found out that she's a female). So I think we feel comfortable with the feedings but I cannot say for sure that she did not ever choke. Nothing has made us think that; however, there are times when you can tell that she needs to breathe and we wait a sec. Sorry, does that make sense?

We thoroughly clean out her mouth after feedings - unless there is a tiny bit left, we get just about everything out. We usually use a soft paper towel and about 6 q-tips. I'd like to think that we're very thorough.

We put her in the bathroom with some steam from the shower for a few minutes and some liquid came out of her mouth - colored like the formula so maybe we did get some in her lungs. ??? I don't know what would make some liquid come out of her mouth - it was about 5 minutes later that that happened.

I spoke with the vet and I'm going tomorrow to get squeezed in between visits. I hope it's nothing serious. We have done everything right by her. We went out and got new pans, stopped burning oils, airred out the house the first day to ensure there was no residue oil/smells in the house, etc.

The only thing I can think of is we have two pugs - maybe she's allergic. ??

Thanks again for your help! I appreciate it very much!

Hi!

I wanted to let everyone know that my macaw will be fine - she does have an infection though.

The gram stain showed many gram negative bacilli. So we're starting her on a liquid antibiotic and the vet said it should clear up within a week.

I'm not sure what caused it though, as I FORGOT to ask!? duh. I have a call into him again. :)

Thank you everyone for your advice!

I am so glad you decided to take her to the vet.  You never know with these guys.  She should be feeling better soon!  Keep us updated.

Well, I sure am glad you listened to Indy and not to me.  When she let that little bit of food out she could have been a little bit overstuffed. I have had them throw up a little when I fed too much.
What is her name?

Glad you took your baby to the vet and she's is getting treatment. What is his name? Do you have any pics? It would be wonderful to see him as he grows up. Has he been sexed?
