Hi all...I am relatively new to the group...I have a 10 month old B&G Macaw...she is great!!  She has started taking her food cup out of its slot and throwing it on the bottom of her cage floor...she has been doing this x 2 days now, she is eating well....Does anyone have any insight as to why she may be doing this and if it is something I should be concerned about??

Thanks!!

Sounds like she likes to play with her cup. My Goffin does it also once in a while but she likes to dump her water dish! I would make sure your B&G has lots of things to play with and climb on in her cage or get one of those locking food cups to break her habit! I give my B&G a kids cup to play with with a little peanut butter in it so he has to work to get it out. He has never tried to remove his food cups. I wouldn't be too concerned it's probably a passing phase as long as shes eating well.

My Jenday will work for an hour to get her big heavy food bowl over the side of her tray.  It's so funny to see!  She exhausts herself doing it and then is just so satisfied when she's finally done.  Just like a kid...its soooo cute!  I love the idea about the peanut butter in the kids cup!

My Too liked to do this also so I went out and bought the heaviest crock bowls I could find. Normally found in the dog section of a pet store and he can no longer toss his bowls. That doesnt stop him from trying but so far he has had no success:)

Dude (out b&g) is 3 yrs old and also likes to throw things at the bottom of his cage, but he can't get the food cups out of their holders (he's in a king's cage).  So he takes all his foot toys and hurls them at the bottom -- I think he likes the sound it makes when they bang against the metal grate.  Also when he's on his playstand and not getting enough attention, he will take his pellets out of his food cup and throw them one at a time (and I'm talking major league baseball throwing) around.  He can hurl a pretty bird pellet about 6 feet when he has a mind to -- but he'll never throw away a nut or a treat.  Good luck.

It could be that your bird likes to eat off the bottom of her cage.  My green wing has her own room, no cage but metal shelving units with additional perches attached.  I went to Sears Hardware and purchased aboout 6 of those metal bowls with magnets on the bottom [for holding items while working under cars] and use them as food dishes.  This curbed the the dish tossing... for awhile.  I just have to more frequently hose out the room [drain in the corner] and let her eat and play on the floor.

Hello.
Thally (Scarllet macaw) does the same everytime she gets bored with her toys.  I rotate her toys so that she does not get tired of the same toys in her cage.  Nothing to be concerned about.

My blue and gold did the same thing.  We have an animal environments cage and we put little clips in to secure the bowls--no matter how hard she tries to throw them, they don't come loose now!

It is a game, sort of like when a small baby throws toys on the floor because it is fun to watch mommy bend over to pick them up!
