Before we left for the ann arbor bird show my husband informed me "NO NEW BIRDS" I was content to just spoil the birds I have with new toys and treats. So what does he do, he falls in love with a 3 1/2 minth old blue and gold and comes to find me telling me I just have to see this bird. It's huge but I am open to interacting with her and was pretty surprised at how socal and sweet she was. Before we could purchase her we both had to handle her and that included put your finger in that huge beak to help support her well she perched on your arm. I was scared to death but she was as gentle as could be and he convinced me to bring her home. Most of the info on the net I am finding is pretty redundent. Someone told me at the show that she shouldnt have any wooden toys untill she is 6 months old..Is this true? I am also seeing they need  a higher fat diet then most and would like to know what foods I should feed to be good for her. She is on pretty bird select diet now and loves the birdy bread. I would like all the hints and advise I can get to raise this girl into a healthy bird. Her name is Gillian:)

That's so funny that your husband would do that.  My husband is always fussing about the mess the animals (2birds 1cat & 4dogs) make, but then he spoils them rotten, feeding from the table and giving treats.
Hope you enjoy your new girl, I would love to have a young one to raise, but I have two rehomed fids that stole my heart. (YNA & Senagal)

Mis Laura,   Congratulations to you, your hubby and Gillian.  I love that name.
Yes,  baby macaws will eat the wood.   Not all, and its possible that Gillian wont, but just in case, most breeders that I know say that to new moms.
My two macaws get a walnut, brazil nut and an almond daily,  the older one (Tucker) gets 2 tablespoons of a macaw seed mix, and its not much, but works.  lol  My younger one, (Mythos), gets 3 tablespoons of the seed mix daily.  He also gets fruits, veggies, and a bean mix daily.  They both have pellets 24/7.

Mythos is weaning, actually hasnt been on formula for almost 2 full weeks,  Im a proud mom.  lol   He will be a year old next week.   The best advice that I can offer,  Just love them to pieces.  They are amazing and awesome creatures.  Mine are anyway,  lol,  I dont have a B&G.  I have a calico and a ruby.  But Ive seen some really cooool B&G>   cant wait to see photos of Gillian.

Congrats on your new baby B&G. I have a 3 year old B&G, his name is Tico. Tico was 4 months old when we got him. He was still a baby, but looked nothing like a baby.LOL! I had never heard of not giving him wood until 6 months, and the vet had never mentioned it to us either. He hasd gone for his first check-up as soon as we got him. As for his diet, he gets nuts daily,2 or 3, he likes them all, but his favorite are macadamia, plus with them it's a little bit of a challenge to get the shell open sometimes. He eats zupreem and he eats alot of people food, fruits, vegetables, meats, a little yougart. We include him in all our daily activities, he has perches all over the house and outside he also has one(his wings are always clipped and he's under a canopy). He loves to  play and chew and shred, so I try a rotate his toys every 2 weeks so he doesn't get bored. Good luck to you and your husband with Gillian, enjoy her, B&G's are wonderful. Parrot                Lorain

Now, I have never heard of never giving a wood toy to a young B/G either.  The species come from a rain forest and really has not been domesticated long enough (such as dogs) to have that wild knowledge bred out of them.  But on the other hand, I have been told and we tell our customers that while their baby bird is being weaned, do not give them alot of toys as it take the focus away from the seed/pellet and they tend not to eat as much as they should.

I have two B/G's (one comes home in a month) and I love them!  They are some of the calmer Macaws on the Macaw tree.  They tend to take change easier than most and have a laid back personality.  Congrats on your new addition.

Smiles!

Kristi
