My macaw suddenly got sick he has been to the vet fecal was neg, bloodwork was all fine , X-Rays showed nothing wrong.. They think it is bacterial and very well can be . he soaks all his food in his water before eating it and even when I change it 4 or 5 times a day it still is yucky.. He is under a heat lamp and on Baytril he was improving but now looks worse today.. he is not eating on his own and will only take finger foods from our hands anyone know of any good finger foods to give him? so far crackers and bird biscuits are all he has eaten and he is real skinny it is amazing how fast they can go down on you.. Called the vet today Sunday she said he might be dehydrated and to give him some peadylite (sp?) I gave him some hand feeding formula yesterday that he laped up great from a syringe however all that I got down him yesterday is still in his crop today.. Vet said she would have to look in her book at work tomorrow to see what to do about that.. Anyone have any ideas of what I can do till tomorrow to help him along? Allison |

His crop hasnt emptied since yesterday??? Is it possible there is blockage, did the vet check??? Is there an emergency vet you can get to?? That would be my first choice. Peanut butter on whole wheat toast is a favorite around my house with both my macaws. What do his droppings look like??? Are they normal??? Tink |

Even with xrays it is still possible to have a blockage if he isn't digesting his food properly. I don't think small pieces of wood would show on xray either, since they are not radio opaque. Metals show up well but not non-metal items. Has he been chewing up paper, cotton or any other kind of string, or had he chewed pieces off a wooden toy? He does need to be seen by a vet who is capable of emptying his crop. This is an emergency if he hasn't emptied yesterday's food by now. Hope you can get help today. Annie |

I posted a reply to this on another message board where I saw it first--and agree with Annie. The crop blockage needs to be taken care of as soon as you can find someone qualified to do it--not tomorrow. Not only is the food not passing through, but it's likely the medication and liquids aren't either, so he is getting little-to-no medication, no nutrition, and no life-sustaining liquids. |

Hi everyone thanks for trying to help.. On Monday Morning I started calling vets further than the 100 mile radius I tried last week.. I finally got one that did see birds but admitted it would be way over his head (wish the vets that I called last week would have referred me instead of wasting my time) He referred me to a Bird Hospital in Loveland Colorado. By the time I finally got a hold of them and drove 4 hours it was after 4pm.. I left him there and figured he would be dead by morning.. Good news he is still in guarded condition but he is improving.. They ran more tests and it looks like he just has a real bad infection.. I have to call later to find out more.. Allison |

Just got back from the vet we had him put down. He was not responding to anything. She said it could be PDD, or a very bad bacterial infection, or Zinc/Lead poisoning. All of which present the same symptoms.. His digestive system shut down and he basically was starving to death.. I asked him if he wanted to fight more or if he wanted to go and he pretty much got worse in my arms.. God it was so hard to make that decision I feel like I lost a child. He was my baby I hand raised him.. He was so weak the only thing that was keeping him going was the IV fluids. I did not want to leave him there to die alone. We brought him home with us now we have to decide if we are going to burry him or have him cremated. I did not have her do a necropsy on him I just wanted him home and at peace no more messing with him.. Allison |

Alison, I am so sorry about your loss. I know how devastating this is and how incredibly hard a decision that was to make. Your in my thoughts and prayers. Rest assured, he is no longer ill and flying high and free with the angels. Tink |
