I have 2 cockatiels and just adopted a hahns macaw a few weeks ago. So far things are going alright. After reading about some problems people have had I am getting worried that I wont handle things right when something comes up. We dont have his backgroud because he was a lost bird that nobody came looking for at the shelter. It seems to me that someone was good to this bird. He or she seems good natured. Of course has his moments....but they arent really bad. Just "cocky". Im wondering if this is his personality or will the real macaw come out after he is more comfy? He has a nice big cage with toys and lots of room. He also has a playpen and the bird store told us not to put it on top of the cage or anyplace higher than our eye level so he wont try to be the boss. And I also have to talk the hubby into clipping the wings. I think I may just sneak him over to get it done. Im so excited and want to do things right. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Ruby |

I havent checked in for awhile, sorry I missed this post. I have a 1 yr old Hahns, Kiwi. I love him very much, but I have to admit that sometimes it isnt easy, LOL. Cocky is a good word for them. Hahns typically are little clowns, and Kiwi lives up to that. He plays constantly and does the funniest things. He is a good talker, and knows about 20 words/phrases. He is still a baby and still learning, and surprises me with a new word every once in a while. I brought him home at 12 weeks of age, and he was already saying "hello" and "step up". He loves toys, and has to have a cage full, with lots of new ones in as often as possible. He especially loves anything with bells. He is a little acrobat, too, always hanging upside down by one leg. He has a very big cage, the same size that my Amazon is in. He is a picky eater, and it is a battle to get him to eat his veggies. He only likes some fruit, and he hates pasta. But, he loves sprouts, luckily. He dosent like the conure sized pellets, he has to have the big macaw sized kind that he can hold with his foot and munch. One of his favorite activities is taking a shower with me. He loves to play in the water, and will babble about the "show-ar" while playing. But he is very loud. Very very loud. He is louder than my Double Yellow Head Amazon. And he is loud quite often throughout the day. He babbles constantly, in a cute little cartoonish voice that I love, but then he frequently lets out with ear splitting monotonous shreiks. It can be hard to handle sometimes. I would definitely recommend keeping your Hahns' wings clipped if he is anything like my Kiwi. When Kiwi is flighted, he becomes a holy terror, with attitude coming out the wazoo. He wont "step up" which he normally does without question, and makes me chase him throughout the house. He also becomes very nippy when flighted, and those nips can hurt something awful. When he isnt flighted, he is very loving and likes to cuddle. He especially loves to lay upside down in my hands and get scritches. All in all, they are great companions and loving little birds, but they need to know their limits and have a routine and consistant rules or they will push you. |

I have a Hahns, Beaujolis, who is 7-1/2 years. She came to me 14 months ago. She is the most affectionate bird I've ever had, and is ready for kisses and cuddles ALL the time. When she really wants a snuggle, she is pretty vocal about letting you know it! However, she is not my noisiest by a long shot ... that place is held by Basil, an Indian Ringneck. Her shrieks really rattle your eardrums! The four of them (Sage, white eared conure and Pepper, Cockatiel) normally only let loose a bit in the evening before bedtime, or when a stranger comes into their room. The rest of the time they just chirp and talk amongst themselves. Beau is very playful and loves hanging upsidedown from my finger. She also loves being scritched under her wings and on her tummy, and will come running if you ask her if she wants scritches. All of my guys are strong flyers, and can fly with very little feather. I'm not taking chances (had some close calls many years ago), so I keep their flight feather clipped right down. This makes a big difference in attitude as well. When she came to me, she would only eat pellets that are not recommended by my vet, and nothing else! I converted her to Harrison's, and she now eats the cooked grain mix I make, cooked veggies ... loves mashed potato! She'll nibble at raw veggies now as well. She eats a bit of banana, but that's pretty much it for raw fruit. She still won't touch raw seeds, but I can live with that. By the way, if it's on my plate, she'll eat it!! So I've tried fooling her by putting little extras there for her, but the monkey seems to know! Beaujolis is the only one of my guys who is "potty" trained. That happened so easily! It's such a treat not getting pooped on by at least one of my group! The others who replied here refer to their Hahns as "he", I'm wondering if either the sex (I had Beaujolis DNAd so know she is a female) or the age of the bird makes a difference in their disposition. Oh boy more macaws! Those are beautiful pics! I need to get an updated pic since Simon doesnt look as "ruffled" now that he is more comfy. I did get his wings trimmed and hubby hasnt mentioned that he has noticed...lol. My hubby pulls Simon on a little kids dump truck and when simon is done,he climbs up the rope to him. They are so cute together...LOLOL Simon eats macaw pellets and seed right now. We are still learning what he likes. He loves butter beans and raisin bread! Likes to be scrathed under his wing and sometimes puts his head down for a head scratch. He was in the pc room but now he is in a spare room because its brighter during the day. Yes he has a loud voice. But he seems to be quiet at the right times and very talkative when we are with him. Sometimes he just jabbers away and we dont have a clue to what he is saying. I bought the book everyone talks about."Guide to a well behaved parrot" I think its wonderful! Cant wait to hear more stories, Ruby |
