Im so jealous of all you "Parrot pros" out there! I have 2 cockatiels and one hahns macaw and I wish I could do more than that. I think that so far I am just lucky that my hahns has been a "good" bird. I bought the book,"Guide to a well behaved Parrot" and I just got my first issue of "Bird Talk" magazine today in the mail. Im always worried I might do something wrong and cause a bad behavior to start Ruby |

If Sherry thinks a macaw is a perpetual two year old.......take Major and see what the terrible two's is like........I thought that macaws were docile compared to the Cockatoo's........ I've had 3 macaws that were here for a short time before they were adopted, and what sweet loveable birds they were....... Wonder if the sex makes a difference? Although I had two females and one male.....Too2 |

As you just had to let me find out for myself Toolady--you are right! A macaw is a little more like a reserved four year old with somewhat a mind of its own--A TOO?? A 2 year old in constant motion! --Not even close in comparison. Both follow voice commands very well--but the macaw is usually where I put him to hear them--the TOO is two rooms away screaming NO! Ms.Am,. I have been around Nay's Casper, I have never seen anything like a Too when he is in his 'poor me' attitude, I have to agree, Casper is nothing like a Macaw. Kocham is a 2 year old with a inquisitive attitude, eager to please. It could be the age also, Kocham is only 4, I hope he will maintain his attitude and personallity as he gets older. I am trying to prepare for what Nay tells me will be his terrible 2's when he gets older and hormonal. fingers crossed that he will not get too bad.. Sherry |

This was all good reading and I love variety in responses.... Now a question for Nancy?????????.......my birds will also "grab/hold on/bite" when they are playing but I thought along different lines.....not to see how hard they may be biting us while practising on themselves, but when they grabbed themselves this would be the reaction if playing on tree branches as it seems if you'll notice they "grab" at any protruding object.... Now you've given me food for thought. Too2 |

What makes me wonder about her practicing biting is that she'll be slinging one of her hanging toys around by the beak and grab it with her foot--and then immediately grab her foot in her beak. Now....If she were playing with a toy and I touched it her beak would be on my finger/hand/arm/etc. I can try to get it on tape, but unless she's really absorbed in what she's doing she'll stop and see what I'm doing instead. Maybe somebody can figure out what she's doing and why. |

I guess I ought to share about my Anna (Anastasia Marie). Anna is a (soon to be - later this month) 5 year old GW Macaw. Yes, she think she is a real princess. She has her own 7' by 10' room (she occupies the back 1/2 behind a half-wall, her TV and food storage is in the front half). The room has a sky light and a drain in the far corner of the concrete floor. It is just off of the main living area, next to the fireplace. She is my sweet hugger. Yes, she is loud sometimes. She early on learned to micmic my high-pitched sneeze and will use it to call me. I am working to get her to use "Momma" or "Momma Peek-a-boo" instead -- also to use her quieter voice instead of screaming "MOM!". She loves to bark with the neighborhood dogs -- also howl at the firetrucks. She tries to imitate our dove's cooing. Sometimes she humms along with my singing. Favorite toys include baby cups and linking rings... also anything "blue". Like many macaw owners, she choose me. We went in to look at a BG but came home with this sweet 3.5 month old (still being hand fed) baby... choosing her over her brother who ignored us when we walked around him rather than turning to keep eye contact. When I hug her, she will often lift her right wing and place it over my hand - squeezing my hand next to her body. She will always be my 'sweet baby gir'. |

I think he was bent that she was leaving, I have no other idea why he would have bitten like that. He has been a gem since then too. I will say it hurt for a few seconds, its still tender but not as bad now. he went right to the bone. After the bite he acted like nothing happened. I just told him to step up and I placed him in his cage and that was it. Sorry it took so long to get back I was away for a couple days. Rob |

HMMM lets see if I can add anything! My Macaw is a Military and is 15 years old. Lilly originally many years ago came from a pet store. Lilly has a very long and sorted history (Lilly came from her Origional owner) but she is as sweet as they come. I would love to share some of her stories here but I tend to get LONG winded <EG>. Being a large bird owner is very new to me and im amazed at how loving Lilly is. She is kind of like a big ol stuffed teddy bear loved to be hugged and kissed. Ya know what they say "nothing like the love of a bird" how true that one is. Hilary |

Hello , omg i can agree with that...the terrible 2's!!! i cannot walk out of the room with my macaw. she freaks out every time. she has to be with me 24/7!!! but she is a sweet, lovable big baby!!! Terra will be 3 yrs old in march. she is gorgeous, and so very smart for a baby. she talks up a storm, and she loves to antagonize my other birds...lol!!! it's just too funny. she loves to go bye-bye in the car when her daddy is home. she is very spoiled. she climbs down her cage and actually follows me all over the house. i feel like a mommy duck/with her baby duck!!! i cannot go into stores now without everyone who works there...who are you missing? where is Terra? only thing i have an issue with her is...HER SCREAMING!!! i tried everything to get her to top. she does for awhile, then she is back at it. anyone have any other suggestions on how to get her to stop? i would value every opinion you all have. Well, have a gr8 day, and hello to all members babies!!! |
