I have had my little hahns "Simon" now since January. No history of course since he was from a shelter. He is very good. Only loud in the am when he wakes up. Has never bitten us. To me he sometimes seems like a shy bird. He never runs to the door for us to get him out of his cage. Most of the time he will walk away when we go to get him out. But he always steps up when asked. He will play with us. Takes food from us. Goes in the shower with us. Seems comfortable and all. I wonder why he would rather try to walk away instead of wanting out. We do work a regular 8 hour day. He isnt nervous around the dogs and cats. He does say "whoof whoof",so I assumed he came from a dog household. We have 2 cockateils too ,all 3 caged separate. Also about talking. Our house isnt a loud busy house. Its just my hubby and myself. Simon seems to like it when we have company. That seems to be when he starts to talk and chatter. I talk to him in the mornings before work and feed him his breakfast. In the evenings also. Most of the time his cage comes out into the living room during the day so he can see what the dogs and cats do all day while we are at work. He seems like he says only the things that he said when we first got him. I was wondering when he might start repeating things we may say. I know he chatters sometimes when we arent in the same room. Its like he has an imaginary friend....lol. Any comments? Thank you, Ruby |

Do you talk directly to him? Some times if you hold him on your finger where he can see your mouth it helps. Also just talk a lot to him. When I give treats I ask"Want a cracker?". Or if I'm feeding "Are you a hungry bird?" I talk to all of them all the time. I have a friend whose BFzon hardly ever talks. When I ask her if she talked to him she said not much. Well dauh!!!! As for the handling, it may be that he wasn't handled mush as a very young bird. Give him lots of good head scritches and tickle under the wings. If I say 'tickle, tickle' mine start putting their wings up. You've only had him 5mo and it sounds like you've done very well with him. It was 6mo before I could even touch my Utoo. He will continue to improve with time. Peggy |

I'm just guessing, of course, but perhaps Simon came from a chaotic household with lots of children and other pets, which might explain both his vocalizations when you have company and his indifference to coming out of his cage. My #2 gray never speaks when anyone is in the same room with her but babbles the same two phrases over and over and over and over when we're just out of sight. (When we're completely out of the house and gone, she might be reciting the entire contents of the New World Dictionary of American English, Third College Edition.) We've had Boo for eight months and she was totally silent for the first 4 months or so. You never know what the next day will bring. |

I always talk to him at feeding time. I never thought to let him see our mought when we are talking. He "lets" us scratch him under his wing, but not normaly on his head. Once when we were playing for awhile he actually put his head down for a little scratch, but just for a second. I was thinking maybe he did come from a busy home too. He likes my daughter, 21 and she can get him to talk to her when she visits. My son also 21 cant even walk by his cage without him lunging at him.He turns into a scary bird when my son comes over. Thank you for your comments. Its good to hear about what others have gone through. Im always wondering if Im doing anything wrong. |

Hi Ruby My Hahns, Beau , very rarely wants her head scritched, but LOVES it when I scritch her "wingpits". She is a real snigglebug, and loves to be on my shoulder, and often leans into my neck while preening herself ... or ME! lol She's really the only "velcro" bird in my little flock. She was alone a lot for quite a while before coming to me a year ago last December. She's going to be eight years old this August. Ruby, I work all day, and I have always left my birds' area well lit while I'm at work, and they have a TV on as well. I might be nuts, but I think they like both the sounds and the movement. As a matter of fact, they watch far more TV than I do! lol She doesn't say much that is identifiable except for "hello". She also copies me when I laugh ... and that makes me laugh harder, which makes her laugh harder as well! It's really a scream! Abby |

Hey Abby, I had been feeling guilty working all day. I leave the TV or radio on also. Kinda like when my kids were little. I know I miss the mornings when the birds are most active. Except on weekends of course. Do you let all your birds on your shoulder? Any problems in the department? I only let the cockatiels on my shoulder. Simon has always been pretty good, but Ive heard all the scary stories. Its funny you talk about the bird laughing. I dont know why but it is too funny when they laugh. Mine does say a few short sentences. Whats a matter, good morning, goodnight, thats good, and a few other things. And sometimes he just jabbers on and we havent a clue to what he is saying. Ruby |

Ruby I have a MRH who talks at times when it's him and I, but let company arrive and he shows off and never shuts up..... Those are the times I'd like to be able to get a word in edgewise. Scarlet has so many different voices, mainly the hello and hi and goodbye ones..... He lived in a pet shop for a while so maybe all he wanted was attention or someone to take him home. So what is he trying to tell me and my visitors????? Too2 |
