One time when I was in Canada for one of my husband's huge family get-together's (seems like it was for a wedding), a bunch of us went somewhere and watched fireworks--I think we were in Kelowna. I couldn't figure out why they were having 4th of July fireworks several days early. I didn't realize it was Canada Day |

Abby, I had never heard of Canada Day, either, til I met you. No telling how many holidays in other countries we in the US don't know about. Annie |

That's so strange, Annie ... I can't remember not knowing about July 4th. In fact, my family was visiting my Aunt in Seattle when I was about 6 or 7, and we happened to be there on July 4th. As you know, I grew up in a small town in northern British Columbia, and fireworks was a pretty tame thing up there. I was absolutely mesmerized by the spectacular fireworks display! Anyway, on July 1st Canada celebrates it's confederation in 1867, so we are celebrating our 141st birthday! Abby |

I have to admit....I hadn't either. But it makes sense that many countries would celebrate such a day. Happy Canada Day, friends! Did you know that the name Canada derives from an Iroquoian word for "village," kanata, that French explorers heard used to refer to the area near present-day Quebec City. Today, Canada comprises ten provinces and three territories. |

Happy Belated Canada Day ! That was interesting Dale. Kanata sounds kind of tribal- like African tribal- to me. Might be a good / unique name for an African Grey bird ? I lived in Niagara Falls, NY for several years, so got to visit several areas of Ontario (Toronto, Barrie). Beautiful up there. Would like to make it to Quebec city or Montreal someday. But I know no French, and I think it is still pretty strongly used there. BTW, Quebec City turned 400 years old 07/03/08. I would have loved to hear all those bells ringing !! |

That's some very interesting stuff there, Ring.....I stayed lost in reading for a long time...made me daydream of the day way back when the fur trade was one of the ties that bound the countries to one another....and heck...the north to the south. Sometimes I think I was born way too late...would have been much happier back then. Can you imagine the one little person in Quebec City who didn't know all the bells would toll? Didn't get the word? lol |
