I was trimming Abby my pugs' toenails and got one a bit close to the quick. We were downstairs and she was really struggling and in pain. I took her into the bathroom and put her claw into a bar of soap and the bleeding stopped almost immediately. So if you aren't close to the kitchen or don't have any corn starch, soap does work! I now keep a bar of soap and box of corn starch in the bird room . Abby wasn't too happy about making a contribuation to the bird tips articles, but is tearing around like nothing happened! I wish she didn't have black toenails!!

I've had a headache for the last few days and finally got to clean the bird room. I read an old tip about putting some pam on the cage  grates so the birdy poop won't stick as easily. I did this yesterday and was able to clean the grate quickly and easily. I took the grate into another room to lightly spray it and let it dry. Has anyone else used this? How did it work for you??? Nan

Bar soap sounds like a good idea to keep in my first aid kit, too.   Beats using the last of my granulated sugar, like I did last time I "oopsed".

I haven't tried the pam, but I've used olive oil on the cage grates before.  Poopies slid off easily, but everything else stuck to it.  I'll have to try the pam, hopefully it doesn't get sticky like the olive oil did.

I bought one of those hand held steam machines and it works great.  The only thing is that I think I bought a too powerful one.  That steam has a real big force and you can blow alot of stuff you don't want all over the place.   And I finally tried that product Poop off (I think that is what it is called)  That worked great but why they put a fragrance to it I don't know.  My hubby doesn't like the bird smelling it even though it says its not toxic.  He wouldn't let me use it unless he was home in case something went wrong.  And then I had to wash and rinse everything over and over to get the smell off.  It would be a great product without the smell and if it was cheaper.

I bought a bird product that had orange in it.  It didn't clean no better than water.

One time I cut my labs nail to short and the septic powder and even flour didn't work.  We couldn't get it to stop so my hubby heated up a butter knife on the stove and applied it.  It worked!  The dog didn't seem to mind.  I don't cut her nails anymore cause she bleeds so bad.  She hates the dremel so she goes to the vet in case she bleeds that bad again!

Indy, I have used Poop Off for years with no side effects for the birds. I understand there are others now don't have a scent. I have never understood why they put scent in it in the first place. Probably because this world is so scent oriented. Maybe because we'd think it was water if they didn't make it smell pretty.
I also use Oxyfresh Cleansing Gele (NOT OxyClean) on a wet rag and it cleans as well and as fast as Poop Off. It is so mild it is made for human bathing. This stuff is sold by individuals but I gave up and called the company to order it. High dollar stuff but you only need a drop or two on a wet rag. I don't even rinse because it is non toxic and it leaves the cage shiny with no soap scum.

I have black toenail dogs, too, but I don't cut them nearly as short as the vet. They almost always nick one or two. I have to use tiny human clippers on NaeNae Chihuahua because her toenails curl under if I am a day or so too long in doing them. Very hard to get around the toe pad with any instrument.
We call it "hanging the dogs", because hubby has to hold them up in the air so they can't fight. Ohhh, how they hate having toesies messed with.
Annie
