As many of you know my U2 Gyspy Rose is quite an escape artist. She has taken the feeding and watering doors off the cages, she has taken apart the cage in general by loosing screw and bolts. I had purchased some stainless steel wire to use in bird toy making, and decided to see if I could also wire some of those bird doors shut. So now all the side doors have new screws with nylon threads, and have been wired shut on top of that!! She is simply out of luck in getting out that way! Now if only I could find a lock that didn't need a key for her main door...

I found a new way to distract a screaming bird! I use a flashlight and put the light on the floor or have it "Crawling" up the wall. They are all facinated by it. Ariel even went oooooooooooo.

I use clear plastic water bottles to put some treats inside them. I 'm trying to see how long it takes Gypsy and Shiloh to take them apart and claim the goodies!
Nan

Betcha it won't take them very long at all, Nanners! lol

Fortunately, I don't have any escape artists. However, Basil somehow manages to get INTO Beau's cage if I'm out of the room for a few minutes, even with the door closed and latched. I really wish she'd do it when I'm in the room to see HOW she does it!!

I'll have to try the flashlight thing.......
Magnolia can't escape any more as her cage is where nothing shows. Nothing means buts and screws.....
And I buy the baby bottles at the dollar store and fill those with goodies....
Another good post. I can't wait to try the flashlight.........

Be careful what you wish for with the flashlight.  As I mentioned in another post I used one with Ms Morgan to curb her house eating habits, and now she spooks at any flash of light.  I still use the flashlight turned off and threaten her with it, but once she looks up at the ceiling, at the wall, and then at me it's like "pfffttttt...you ain't gonna do nuthin'."

It took Shasta about a week to figure out that if she loosened the nuts on the food doors she could lift the bolts up and push the door out.  I took a pair of pliers and tightened them down as much as I could...so far so good.  Plus, it's helped keep her beak trimmed with her trying to turn them.  I just have to maintain a new ritual to check the door bolts every morning (when I check to make sure everybirdie's doors are latched).

I'll have to try the clear plastic water bottles and treats with mine.  None of mine spend any time on the bottom of their cages, so I'll have to figure something else out.

I've used the flashlight in the past to get my cats to play and my pug Abby loves it. So I worked with the birds letting them think it's a game. I figured it would scare them otherwise. They seem to like it and it provides a distraction. Rolling a bottle full of pennies in the room seems to grab their attention too. Hopefully with the daily new toys, music and tv this should keep them businer when they can't be out.

You can hang the bottles up, or attach them near their food bowls, just make sure that if you use  rope or chain that it isn't too long. I've used those plastic ties and attached them to the cage bars.

It didn't take them  long at all to open up their treat bottles. fortunately I have more. Nan

I don't think mine will be afraid of the flashlight as that's how we live during hurricanes........
I even have the one that is hands free and when I'd walk into their dark room to check on them there never was any reaction...........
But I figured I'd start off again when it's inside play time.......

A few months ago, my GWM decided to show off her new trick - of unlatching her cage door (which has tight upper and lower latches) and then wandering out of her room and into the living room... calling for me. I bought a set of 4 small locks - all keyed the same - and placed 2 onto the door (with the keys hanging - up high - on the wall of her room). The little show-off then proved to me that she could open the latches on the top of her cage and then (hanging upside down) push open the doors from below.... and coming to get me to show off some more.  I am soo loved!  I quickly made use of the other two locks.

So far, the locks are holding.I guess 'bullet proof' equals beak proof.
