This fall I cut some branches from a cottonwood tree we have. Wayne did the upper branches cause I'm chicken lol. I  steam cleaned them and left them in the sun for a few days and I've had them in my workshop for a while.
In order to make the notches so they will slide down and fit on the bars of the cage I used a dremmel tool cutting wheel. I cut the branch ends so a  notch went right down the middle. It went into Olivia's cage without a hitch.
Be sure not to bake these branches in the oven as it makes the natural anti toxins in the wood dry up.. the whole idea is for them to chew on them as well.
If you don't have access to a lot of trees give the local guy that does the tree trimming in your town a call. Tell him what you need and explain that there are trees that are toxic for your birds and ask him what he's cut down lately. With any luck he can keep you in branches for a while!
Also I drilled some holes into Olivia's perch, and I plan on fastening some small chewable toys to the branch with some leather. Make them short so your bird doesn't get tangled up. Just one more thing to keep them busy.

Great ideas, Nanners! Only thing is, I can't leave anything in the sun right now as we haven't seen it for ages!

As soon as the sun decides to visit with us again for a bit, I'll try the notch thing. I've only messed around with bolts and washers and attached one end of a branch to the bars inside the cage ... your way would be a lot sturdier, especially for Basil and Beau.

Thanks, Nanners!!

I usually make my own perches but I've never tried the drilling so that toys can be hung. A very good idea. Peggy

My sister has a silver birch tree that is being cut down. Would the branches from this tree be safe to use for perches?
