It's the National Veterinary Poison Control Center and the number is 1-800-548- 2423. they will charge your phone 45.00 for questions about whatever your bird was poisoned by, but if you need to call back again they will give you a case number and you won't be charged again. I think 45.00 is worth to save the life of your avian friends!

That sure sounds reasonable to me, Nanners!! I wonder if there is a similar thing in Canada ... or maybe we Canucks can access the same one?

Anyway, thanks for sharing the info ... it could prove lifesaving!

Yep I keep the number by both of the home phones and it's also in my cell phone as well. You just never know! Nan

I wonder where it's located and if it is a large call centre......
Wouldn't a vet have the same information?  as the centre's read from a pre-determined script? is there anything on the web that could be printed out?
I have the one here for CDC in Atlanta and now will keep this  one handy..
thanks for sharing this.........

I used a  different hotline when I had a question about something my macaw got into and I couldn't find my vet.

This one is ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center operated from the Univ. of Illinois Veterinary Medical College.

They bill $55 to your credit card and follow ups are free. They also called me back twice over the next two days to be sure he was OK.

It may be worth calling and announcing that you do not have an emergency but you need information about other methods of payment besides a credit card. I feel sure they have other ways of accepting payment. Lots of people do not have credit cards.
Good luck.

Nan's message made it sound like the charge is added to your phone bill- so that sounds like you would not need a credit card.

I hunted all over and can't find anything like this in Canada. They just say to call a vet. I wonder if they would take Canadian calls at the National Veterinary Poison Control Center? Nanners, do they have someone there to answer bird-specific calls, or is it for animals in general?

I have been looking for the one Nan put here and it looks to me like the ASPCA one has combined with the National one. Phone numbers are different and cost has been different in several I found, but they all seem to lead to the ASPCA.  One said $25, one said $30, one said $45 and one says $55. Nan's says billed to phone, the others say billed to credit cards. I remember that I paid $45 billed to my phone, I think, but that was at least 15 years ago.
Also it looks like Canada is included in the service.
Someone else needs to look for poison control centers online and see if I am correct or if we need both numbers. They all do lead to Univ of Illinois.

BTW, a non emergency question telephone call costs $20 according to one place I read. Dang, that's awful. Maybe they mean vet info calls that are non-emergency.
Annie
