When I make up Jack Bird's meals I save some back and freeze it into ice cubes. If the meal I'm making for the birds is too hot I plunk a couple of cubes of juice in to cool it down. It tastes good to them and no waiting! I've substituated the juice for water in cooking up some of the meals like the beak appetits or in minute brown rice. this adds a different taste to the meals. Good ideas, Nan! While browsing around the stores during all the "after Christmas sales", I found a small juicer. This contraption has added some interesting flavors to my bird food recipes. About once a week ........just before the market run, I throw in all the leftover raw vegetables and fruits. The juice is never the same.....apples, carrots, jalapinos, grapes, palmagranites, celery, tomatoes, etc. However, this juice - when used as the liquid in my rice cooker with the grains I've chosen for the week, make a healthy treat for the feathered guys. A friend was visiting awhile back and she witnessed this process. She emailed me a few days ago to let me know that she now uses the idea to cook for her dog! Apparently, the little guy has had some major allergies/skin issues over the years to processed/manufactured dog food so she's been "cooking" for him for over a year now. Apparently, he has been itchy free for several months!! Crystal |

Crystal, I do the same thing for my dogs. Pugs and Frenchies are allergy prone so I've been making their wet food for several months. I use a dry food called Nutro Ultra which is chock full of goodies and doesn't use wheat or corn. I cook stuff up in the crock pot and then run it through the food processer. Nan |

Nan maybe I'm tired but what kind of juice are you meaning? Is it what you cooked the meal in? Or juice we drink? Well you said juice not stock.......Duhhhhhhhhhh Anyway it sounds like a good idea either way. Too2 |

Well the last few weeks I've made a veggie juice we drink to the dogs food in the cooking stage, as a veggie broth and it combines with the meat in the crock pot for an awesome broth. I strain the broth and it gets poured onto their dry food. So they get the food I make up, some broth, dry food and Missing link dog suppliment. For the birds I make a veggie juice and a fruit juice and use it to cook their meals. Jack Bird's food is different as he gets more of the pulp, so I take a bunch of veggies and fruit and mix his in the food processer. Intianlly I was using the juicer for his meals but it wasn't quite pulpy enough. I also feed him some fruit/veggies in a dish on his cage floor. His lory powder is sprinkled on his pulp juice 2x daily Avalanche you can use apple juice or any of the juices as long as there is no sugar added. Also watch for the salt content in a lot of the veggie juices too. This is why I make it fresh and freeze what I don't use right away. Jack is stocked for quite a while and I made juice up for the rest of the birds too. I'm glad I have a freezer. Nan |

Nan I've seen on bird sites and have the print out where we can use V8 juice as a substitute for water in recipes. Since I don't drink it I wonder if the salt content is high. Too2 |

V8 is high in salt, Toolady. Even the Low Sodium V8 has 140 mg sodium per serving. Because of my salt intolerance, I've often thought about getting a juicer so I could make my own. Maybe I'll have a look around and see what kinds of deals I can find. |

Hi Abby..... thanks for letting me know that as I had my doubts but I figured it probably would be... So now to think of another good "stock' for a tasty change in their foods... I looked at the prices of the Juicers...way out of my reach... Too2 |
