Hello all. My name is Mandy. I am owned by an Umbrella cockatoo (11 yr) name Ellie, a Blue and Gold Macaw (8 yr) name Teal, and a Blue Front Amazon (19 yr) name Tony. I am very pleased to be here and hope that I can help and get Help. I live in Indiana. |

Hi Mandy: I enjoyed seeing your pictures. Sorry that you have a bird that's a bit self destructive. Does your too actually tear the skin or only the feathers? My Twiggy, a Congo African Grey, barbers her feathers too, some times, much worse than at other times of the year. I do have a word of caution for you as so many members have lost their birds in fly-away accidents...even though their wings are clipped. Please try to get your birds accustomed to harnesses or flight suits before taking them outside to play on their play stands and trees again. I can't tell you how often my heart has been broken and how many tears I've wept along with other members here who's birds were accidentally startled and flew away, never again to be found alive. An accident like that is so easily prevented that some owners seem to never be able to forgive themselves for making the stupid mistake that caused their bird to be lost. I hope you take my warning to heart and understand that I am telling you this with the of intentions for your birds continued long life and your continued happiness owning and loving your birds. Again, welcome to the group. di |

Oh, I see now, Twiggy doesn't have wing feathers eithter. She like to keep hers trimmed short too. My hubby says that she likes to keep her feathers short because I keep my hair cut pretty short, too. lol Here's a picture of my sweet Twiggy-Bird in 2007 Here is her most recent picture, she's looking so much better right now. di |

Welcome to the group! I also have a grey that barbers. But I hate to be the one to disagree with having them outside. First if he falls like a rock and something scares him there is a chance of getting hurt. I have had my livingroom lined with body pillows since he decided to take wings off last winter. After going to vet for many split chests. But the other things is that everyone forgets how fast they can climb. He could climb high in a tree and then be in trouble. Since now he can't fly. First not reaching him or he goes from tree to tree but if he fell from a high height it would be horrible. Also isn't the BG out there too. Please don't take my post as getting on you. But like it was said before a couple members here lost their birds. Recently one found hers (thank God) but our other member didn't. And the pain she goes through all the time since is one reason not to take a chance. I would hate to see you feel the pain these two ladies went through. I took a chance 20yrs ago and was lucky to grab my BF before she got to climb anything. One nice glide and she was pretty far from me. I understand he doesn't have wings but he can still climb. I took the chance once and have never in the last 20yrs did it again. There are a few here that have nice enclosures for outside if you could afford to build one. Also some just put their birds in their cages outside. Supervised. I'm glad you found this group and hope my post doesn't offend you. Indy |

Please all calm down!!! The picture is far away so you can't see the same colored harness on the blue & gold (matches his yellow on his chest)!!!!! Also the tree that I let Ellie sit in is only 6' tall. I AM a responsible bird owner and take all precaustions. Also she never leaves the tree and if she were to jusmp either hubby or I am right there for her. Perhaps I should even have posted it. It seems some are jumping to conclusions? I hope I have answered all your answers and explained all your concerns!!! |

I definately didn't post that to offend you but see I did. I am sorry I did but just wanted to let you know what could happen even in the best situation. I did not suggest you were a bad parrot owner. If you reread I tell you that I did the same thing and was surprised how fast they can move. On the BG I will admit I couldn't see the harness. The harness is a good precaution. Sometimes pointing out things on here comes over the wrong way. I would not want you to not post pics. If you read alot of old posts you will see where people suggest things when they see any dangers in a pic. Toys etc. It is never meant to put someone down but protect the bird. Indy |

Sorry, I just quit a bird board because they were "so in your face, and pointing out what you do wrong all the time. I just got so sick of it. So please all don't be offeneded. I am used to having to deffend myself all the time. I know what could happen when they are outside, that is why I take all precaustions! I have had birds for 20years (started out young)! |

We don't try to offend... but most of us have had those 'moments' with our darlings that are forever ingrained in our hearts... We just don't want someone else have to experience the same thing.... We may get in your feathers, but usually not your face. |

I am so glad to know that you have had years of experience and then you know how amiss it would be for us who have had that experience, to not share and point out the many risks, with those just starting out. We have been there and done that, and the heartaches at all cost have to be avoided so the newbie’s and their birds stay safe. It would be unforgivable to not point out the dangers of the “what could?happen and has happened to so many of our members birds. Myself included. I hope you will share in the same responsibility and help out when you see someone not aware and taking risks especially where flight is concerned, where the bite of a cat can kill, where a pet dog can just as easily become over playful and the ultimate happen. I couldn’t forgive myself for not pointing out the hazards, and I don’t believe you could either. So many of our newbie’s want and need to learn from us old timers. We need to share our knowledge on the bird’s care and welfare. If it means just one bird saved then it’s worth the slight we may feel at our methods, or our wisdom being questioned. |

Etta i for one want ppl to tell me things I might not no If i do, then nothing wrong with a reinforcement. Yesterday afternoon two of my baby tiels that my sons family has excaped out the door, the grandsons let them out, they were clip but have growed out enough to let them fly. They was able to recover bud, but cricket is gone(we are still looking) as I watch my video of them I can still tell what one is cricket as she was my favotie. My heart is breaking, as I was out there calling and looking for her I see sky everywhere and feilds, and other birds and hawks. It is the wide openess and how small I am. How small she is. So anybody that has had it happen knows the heart break and the thoughts and ALL of it. I just want to say thank you wither I no things or not the reinforment of perventing the pain is always good. |

Daisy, I ache for you knowing that heartache and please do all the things that may bring her home again... On the side bar is a help section and prayers that you find her and find her soon.. With her buddy's cage out and calling for her maybe it won't be long!. I pray that she won't stray far. They say they stay around for the first three days... And hide in the most unusual places... Keep looking and calling... |
