Hi everyone,
My parakeet Tiki still is scared of me in the cage. I keep trying, once I get him, he doesnt bite but definitely wants to fly away from me. Its been along time since I had a parakeet , just wondering if he will get better when he gets older. My others would fly over to me, kiss you, fly to my other birds but not this one. Do you think he is still to young. He is almost 6 mos old now.

He is Happy, playful , chirppy bird - which of course is good. Should I just be alittle more patient? I will love him anyways!
Patti

Patti......... why are you in the cage?
Since he is so young it's surprising he hasn't tried to bond with you..
I'm sorry I can't remember all the details but he is a re- homed bird?....
It looks like you will have to be patient. I'll look and see what sites are good reading on ways to encourage trust and bonding.     Too2

Even if you decide to have him fully flighted, clip his wings till he is tame. It will so much easier to work with him. Mine is 7mo and tame but I do keep his wings clipped. Otherwise he just gets to independent.  Peggy

Patti, I have often read about how people tamed budgies. I have not tamed one myself. They say to reach in and pick up the bird with your hand wrapped around his body, being careful not to put pressure on his breast so he can breathe.
Wrap him in a washcloth or other small cloth. Snuggle him up close and tickle his head while talking softly to him. I did this with lovies, but because they were a pair they never did become very tame with me. Most birds are easier to tame if single than a pair of any kind of bird.
I agree with clipping his wings, at least til he stops flying away from you. Have someone with experience do it and show you how so you can do it if he needs to be trimmed later.
I have a pionus who is super sweet, but occasionally gets smart alecky and flies from me instead of obeying me. I pick her up right away and trim her wings. You wouldn't believe the difference it makes immediately. She can still fly because she is so strong, but her attitude changes so quickly. I rarely have to trim her but when she acts up it's a quick and easy attitude adjustment.

To funny Too2 - I am not in his cage my hand is. I can clip his wings as I do my other parrots and have done his too.
I put him in the same room as my other parrots to help him feel better as he seemed lonely and is now much more chirpy then before.
I can get him out ot the cage by grabbing him, but i read that you should get them use to your hand and let them step up on it and this is what I was trying to do. I will try the approach of getting him and having him with me more often and clip his wings like I was originally doing. Hopefully this will work. My other two parakeets werent cuddly but definitely would want to be around us.
Thanks for all the advice.
Patti
(Oh by the way - he is about 5-6 mos old and I got him at Petco)

When he see's how you interact with the others in the room. I wonder if he'll begin to learn trust seeing the play times between you and the rest of the flock....
Back to patience again Patti... especially when he's that age and been around who knows what types of folks prying and prodding!!..... Too2
