Hi,
I have two parakeets I've had them for a 4 days now.  I take them out of their cage and put them on top of the cage and bring their latter out so they can play on it.  They do have fun climbing all around it but I don't feel like I'm playing with them-I'm just watching. I do put them on my had but they really don't have interest in playing.
So, I would love some idea's.
Thanks!

I have been trying to figure out all night what I do play with my parakeets and have decided nothing--not like with the big dudes anyway. You have 2 so that makes its harder to get into their play space. Take one at a time away from the other and start by just the simple training steps--like step up. Using your hands you become a ladder--one hand over the other with the bird climbing..Talking at this time and developing your own patter with each bird--I also do simple things like letting them pick or hunt for food on my shoulder--If these are your only birds you might try some of the bigger bird games like peek a boo. But remember with 2--they don't NEED you . So it will be tougher to get that interaction.          katz

By the way--they have a VERY short attention span so don't make anything too much work by going at it for too long--5-10 minutes at a time of one on one attention is about all they tolerate.        Katz

so these two just come to you when you get them out of the cage ?? or do they flap around a bit.  I get mine out and all they do is want to head the otherway away from me.  One is getting a little friendlier then the other.. Chloe is a spaz... she is so skiddish.  so she may be the trouble one of the duo :)... anyway  I love them both..

Hi,
When I had a parakeet -(twice so far both died at 8 or 9 yrs of age) we thought them what I say is clap your hands. I would take my hand (fingers and bend them together) and say clap your hands. They would take there claws and lift there leg and bring together every time I would say clap your hands and I would do the motion with my fingers. It is so cute. My cockatoo is learning it now but I can get my lovebird or grey to but I am convinced my too will do it soon. Also, I would take a small little cat plastic ball w/holes in it w/the bell in the middle - take it and shake it and just repeat "shake your ball". Eventually it will do this too on its own and when you tell them too. Our parakeets were smart and learned alot but mostly when they were over the age of 2 and then again I only had one of them not 2.
Hope this helps.
Pattti
