I am just wondering - - can I paint my bird's cage with acrylic paint or some sort of paint that is safe for them?

Thanks!

My opinion:
I think it's always risky to paint a birdcage -- mainly because of what is in the paint and what is under the paint.  Lead and zinc are two deadly elements that you might encounter in the cage itself, in the welds, and in the paint.  If you do try to do this, be sure that you buy paint that is clearly labeled "Baby Safe" or "Child Safe" and do not return your bird to that cage for at least a week -- preferably two or three weeks -- after painting it.  JMO

I have painted many cages for softbilled birds, like canaries and finches. I used black Rustoleum spray paint but first called the Rustoleum company and gave the customer service person the numbers off the bottom of the can. I asked about zinc in the paint. There was none. It dried very quickly but I still waited about 2 weeks before putting the birds in the cages. The paint must be used outdoors and allowed to cure so there are no fumes to injure the birds.
The paint held up very well but will not hold up well if you have hookbilled birds since they may chew on it, and will climb on it.
If the cage is rusty, you must clean all the rust off first, scrub it down and allow it to dry before painting. It is a process that will take several days if done properly.

I too have painted alot of cages. I like Rustoliam, it holds up well. As already stated, it must be child safe and I paint outside and then leave the cage to dry in the sun for at least a week. Don't try to change to color of the cage. I tried once to paint a white cage black. What a mess. If I paint one now it's just to touch it up, not change the color. Good luck with it. Peggy
