Anyone here get a handfed parakeet? I am going early next week to look at them. I know they are hard to find but this breeder who also owns local small pet store has some ready at the end of this week. I know she hand feds them from syringe so I am hoping they are friendly so I can handle right away. I almost bought a non handfed one but decided to work.
Any suggestions? I had a non handfed one in two seperate occassions and didnt have much trouble training it but daughter wants a nice easy going, non biting one so she can hold and pet. Difference in cost is $17 compared to $30.
Patti

there no guarantee that just because a bird has been handfeed thAat it will not bite. all birds bite occassionally also a handfeed bird does not necessarily mean it tame.when you visit the breeder inquire as to whether she handles the babies outside of handfeeding.

I used to raise handfed parakeets. It's started when one of my hens died and I had to take the babies. It was such fun and they turned out so sweet I just kept it up. They would crawl all over me like tiny kitties. You are lucky to find someone who handfeeds them.  Peggy

I think hand fed parakeets are awesome. I know because I handfeed them. That doesnt mean they wont bite though. They have no idea how little they are. Regular handling and training makes a HF a joy. I raised one my friend has had now for two years. He has a fifty word vocabulary, and so playful.

I went to the breeders today. She didnt have any and said she didnt get them in so my guess is that she gets them flown into to her then she sells them. The other babie parrots areas were clean, but her own parrots cages were very gross on the sides of cages and perches looks like she only changes the paper. I was not impressed. Her handfed was $35 so now not sure. We want a parakeet or lovebird that is real gentle.

Patti, maybe if you go slowly you can find a family who has a pair who breed. Sometimes those babies are handled a lot by the whole family. Handfeeding is not what makes them sweet, handling a lot while they are growing does. Some breeders take in babies bred at different facilities and you could get double trouble. If a disease is in one aviary, then the babies can bring it with them or catch it from the seller.
I have a friend who used to breed large parrots. She also took in babies from other breeders to hand feed and sell for them. A group of baby cockatoos brought in a disease and she lost every bird in her facility. Horrible loss for her. She loved those birds.
Check folks out before buying.
The dirty cages could be because birds in breeding mode should not be disturbed any more than absolutely necessary or many will desert their nests and/or babies.
Hope you find your little one.
Annie

Baby parakeets don't have to be handfed to be sweet. I got my Ozzie at 4mo and he was so easy to tame. I clipped his wings and held him close to me and talked to him. He learned to ladder the first time we tried it. He chatters all the time and I'll bet he talks.

I'm a great believer in lovebirds as pets as well. They do need to be handfed though, and handeled everyday to keep them tame. I had a male peachie for years and he was even tame to me after he became a father. Becky had one too and he was a doll. You just have to have te time to give to them.

Annie's right. Try to find someone who just raises a few at home and you will probably get a sweeter baby. Just take your time and you will find what you want.  Peggy
