Hi everyone,
Its been along time since I had a parakeet , so advice is needed. Tiki (thats his name) is letting us handle him, no biting - oh yeah were excited, likes to sleep on my daughter at nite, but other than that doesnt like to be held. He wants to be in the other room with my Umb and CAG. We are letting him out (his wings are clipped) and he heads straight to their room, running as fast as he can. (It is so cute but wears me out!!!). He wants to be with the so bad and we all know he cant.

I just know he is lonely for his other friends. I feel so bad, but I cant hold and play with him all the time to occupy him and he definitely is way to small to be around the other two.

Any suggestions, do you think this will past?

Patti

Just my opinion:
After the quarantine period is over, I would move Tiki's cage into the room with the big birds, only across the room from the big guys.  Of course, his out-of-cage time would have to be elsewhere but when he is in his cage, he would obviously enjoy their company, so why deprive him of that?  If they can't reach him and he can't socialize with them, he should be safe.

The more I've thought about it, the more I have to mention that the budgie sleeping with your daughter is an open invitation for the bird to be mashed during the night.  I wouldn't allow this -- even though daughter and bird might think it's great fun.

Birdlady,

Tiki doesnt sleep with my daughter, he sleeps on her chest while she is sitting at the computer, watching the tv, reading. He couldnt possibly SLEEP with her, she would definitely kill him. Sorry if I misspoke.
Thanks for the advice. MY husband and I discussed again this morning how lonely we think he is. Maybe cause he is still young. his cage is only 10 ft or less from the other birds, but he he is in a corner and cant see them from where he is. We are going to move him tomorrow on Sunday in to their room, I need to make room for him though as we dont have him in one of those small parakeet cages.

He has lots of toys, swing, tent I just dont get it. We also talked about getting another parakeet for him to put in his cage. One week in the bird room and I am hoping he will like it, if not then maybe another baby for him.

Patti

Sounds to me as though you've thought through this matter carefully so I'd suggest that you follow your plan.  Just don't forget about quarantine and vet testing for the new guy.  Budgies are notorious for carrying polyoma and you wouldn't want to introduce that into your collection.  Do let us know how your little guy is doing in a week.
