Hello how are you? Good I hope. Well my question is, I'm confused about oranges...my friend told me that oranges are no good for senies. I am pretty sure that I gave long time ago to my GCC. So, I don't give any more. I'm wainting for some answers. I know that avocadoes and chocalates and caffiene are deadly. Can someone reverify. Thanks and God Bless you and your parrots. I'm still waiting to get a picture taken of my parrots. Lol. Bredbluesky |

There's no need to give a healthy bird Vitamin C. Their bodies manufacture their own Vit C. Won't hurt them so if you like to give it, then do it. My macaw pulled out every leg feather after he ate a wedge of orange. They grew back and the next orange made him do it again. I guessed it was the stickiness, but am not sure. Anyway, he didn't get any more of them after the second time. Certain illnesses can be helped by natural Vitamin C so at some point a vet may suggest feeding citrus. Annie |

I have a senegal and I give hime oranges but only about one segment a week or so as it is acidic. He didnt used to like them but eats them now as well as apple, grapes (only 1 every few days cause of the sugar content ) Trying to get him to eat banana too but not yet :) |

Oranges contain much that is good, beyond vitamin C. They grow in areas of the world that could overlap with many of these birds' natural environments, so they are a very natural food to give them. My Amazon LOVES oranges. I give him about 1/6 of an orange usually twice a week. When my Grey was young, he would eat them but only the white part under the skin. I mentioned to the vet that I thought that was odd. He said that white part (pith) is where lots of the good stuff is Bio-flavanoids with antibiotic, anti-bacterial, and anti-cancer properties. Our flock is fond of oranges as well! I asked my friend Gudrun Maybaum (Holisic Bird Website and TotallyOrganics.com) about this one a few years ago. Among her responses, I remember that she said Oranges were a excellent source of vitamin C. They also work as a nutrilizer for Calcium so serving them with Kale, Broccoli, ect... is a good choice. Also, Oranges are a good natural source for combating bacteria. Not only do I feed Oranges a few times a week, but I boil the peel in water to provide my home with a refreshing smell and natural air cleaner! The link below talks a bit about them. Crystal |

I don't give the birds a lot of orange, but about once a week I buy and orange and share it with them. Basil and Sage really love them, and Beau eats a bit, but Pepper (tiel) won't touch them! lol Abby |

Thank you for letting me know that its ok to give oranges. To all thanks. This morning I was putting in the extra tray in w/chopped up carrots and apples. Well Bubba flew out, he is not trained to go up on a preach. You know the step up trick.Since I am his secound owner. He flew around and landed on my left shoulder. And took a big bite out of ear. Ouch! Then he flew over to my right shoulder while I was sitting down having my coffee...and he bit my right ear, the tip. It looked like it was spilt, but it is not. I grab him and he bit my right index lower half, man it felt like I was in a fight or something a little blood came out. It was hurting bad but I put on some medicine. Cover up the finger.I will have his wings clipped. So that wont happen again. I just wanted to tell so I can feel a little better. Maybe you can give me some advise or ever tell of any experience you had with your senie. God Bless all and have a great day! I will be getting a camera soon I hope and take some pics. Liz |
