I have a 4 year old senegal, we have had him since he was a baby, we had the pleasure of hand feeding him.  He has no favorites in this family of  4. He says about 7 words.  Life got busy and I haven't been able to work with him on learning new words.  Is it to late to teach him something new ?   I also have a parakeet, he has picked up words from the whole family, calls the dogs and the cats even tells the kids to go to bed!     Thanks Jay T

Hi,
You are very lucky! Our Senegal is about 5 yrs old and has never said one word.  We spend tons of time trying to get him to repeat.  No luck.  He imitates sounds really well though.  I often wonder if it is a personality trait - do some senegals prefer to talk, while others prefer to imitate phone rings, door bells, microwave beeps?  I wish I knew.  Good luck.

There's probably not much you can do to make them talk.  Mine is 7 years old and lives with an Amazon and 2 Greys who never shut up, and the Senegal doesn't do much more than laugh and say hi.  She can imitate an Indian Ringneck screech perfectly.  She will occasionally get into a very jabberish mood, if the tv is on or we have company, but none of it makes any sense.

I think you all might be surprised by what your Senegals really can say - they know a lot but aren't show-offs. At the rescue center we have one Senegal, Moose, now Brian, who lives at the center, told us all that Moose did not talk. In fact, Moose is very quiet. However, one day Moose was sitting on my shoulder while I was filling out some forms. In front of me was an unopened package of crackers. Moose said, "cracker?" As I was then fairly new to the foundation, I picked it up and showed Moose that the package was unopened and then put it down. Moose said,"Cracker!" I said to Moose that I didn't want to open the package as I didn't think I should. Moose said, "Ritz cracker!!!" I opened the package and gave him one.Told Brian, who then said he had never heard Moose talk - oh, and were they Ritz crackers? Yes, indeed they were. Another time a little girl was visiting. She was delighted with Moose. When she left, she said good-bye to Moose. Moose said, "Bye-bye, I love you!" Now Moose lives with Amazons, CAGs, a goffin cockatoo, and macaws, I think he only talks when he feels its absolutely neccessary. But he can then said what he wants to say very, very clearly. Still waters run deep, etc., etc., and so forth.
