Im not sure if this is the right place to be asking, but I need some advise.

Today we found 3 baby Blue Jays in our yard.  The mom and dad were going crazy and the babies couldnt get off the ground.  So my husband and I put a small shoe box with grass and limbs in our tree and placed the babies in it.  Two I believe were able to get out of our tree and move to another one in our neighbors yard. One is still in the box, currently. He has made a break for it several times but falls to the ground and hides in the corner of the yard.  So, I keep putting him back in the tree.  1. Am I handling him/her too much?  2. How long does it take for them to be able to fly?  3. Should I just leave him/her alone and hope that it makes it out of our yard without our help?  I am afraid that if he is not up off the ground he wont be able to take that grand leap of faith and take off and get over our fence.

Can anyone shead some light for me??

Hey Bean, I have wondered about the jay baby, too. Do you still see him nearby?
BTW, IamFeathers is a licensed wildlife rehabber.

Well, the baby Blue Jay saga continues.  The two that are still around (one made it to a neighboring tree and I havent seen or heard from it since), are still being fed by mom and dad, but dont seem to be progressing in there stuggle to fly.  They are the cutiest little guys and sure are loud.  I worry that mom and dad will one day not visit and then we will have to take control of them.  They sure are trying to get off the ground, especially one of them.  He/she (should be politically correct :) flapps and flapps and gets a couple inches off the ground and for all its efforts it comes right back down.  Thanks for your replies.  So, now my question is, should I just not worry about them until I dont see mom and dad around?  They sure do let their presence be known when we go out there.

And when and If I dont see mom and dad...What then??

Here is a picture of one of them...not very happy with the photo op. :)

Thanks

Lisa

Oh my, he's a tiny thing. No way he's ready to fly yet. Now I am stumped as to what you should do. Maybe Feathers will be back in here tonight.
So sweet.

Well, I got creative and hacked down some of the branches that were hanging over from the neighbors tree into our yard, and made them a make shift bush/tree.  Its great, I gave them lots of "stepping stones" to climb on.  I must say...it’s magnificent, it goes to the top of the fence.  As I was doing it both babies were watching me with wonder.  When I was finished I went inside to tell my husband about my bush building abilities and I was only in for maybe a min..and when I came back out...one of the babies was already climbing up into it.  So now, it has found a little perch and is just hanging out.  It just thrills me !  So, maybe this is a good step to help the little ones.

That is an awesome picture of the baby blue jay.  Love the brilliance of those bright blue feathers.

Very clever idea about building the bush for them to climb up.

Bad news..........I am so upset...but I guess that nature has its way of being nature.  A hawk has taken both babies.  I was sitting here at my computer and heard a huge commotion in the yard and looked out and saw mom and dad going after the hawk, which had a baby.  We had noticed that one of them was gone. hoping that it had just flown away...but now that the hawk took the last one ...which was very visible all day, I can only think that it got the other little one too.  I am soooo sad.  I felt like they were our babies.  Its funny that I am getting so upset over these little guys....tears are just flowing.  But I guess its just nature.

Just wanted to thank everyone for their advise.  Its great to find such a helpful bunch.  Im sorry I didnt have better news to share.  Was hoping to come on some day and say that they had flown away and are now living the great life of a Blue Jay.

Thanks everyone.

Lisa

I am so sorry.
I wonder if their brilliant blue is attractive to hawks. One flew down into my back yard a few days ago and got a jay baby while both parents were hitting him. I could hear them bopping him. This hawk has taken two babies right in front of me while I sit on my patio. No telling how many he has gotten when I am not out there.
Maybe the next babies of yours will stay put for a while longer so their chance of survival is better.

I am sorry to hear about the little BueJays Lisa and it's sad to think they met such an unfortunate end.........We get teary eyed for the ones that don't make it, forgetting we have no control over nature.... Too2
