I've had my sisters african grey for a year and I've been sick for 7 months with shortness of breath and coughing now I've been diognosed with Hypersensitivity pneumonitis (extrinsic allergic alveolitic)  just my luck.... if it weren't for bad luck I'd have no luck at all... From what I've read this is caused by the dust from the parrot... My parrot is going back to live with my sister which is where he came from to begin with she has another african grey also.  I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how to keep the parrots dust from floating around the room and how to keep from breathing it in????

I have allergies, bringing  home the cockatoo was the limit. I went back on my allergy medication and bought a Hepa Air Filter system.

I do a lot of vacuuming too. Cockatoo and Greys give off a lot of body dust or powder. Using a humidifier will also help, it makes the dust or powder heavy and it falls to the floor faster.

Good Luck with your fids.

Maharet

Shana, you sound like you have checked out this disease, but here's an article that may help a little.
Read the link within this page, too.
I read about a woman once who had it and they built a special glass room in their house with separate ventilation so she could still see the birds. She was never able to go in the room with them again though. Her husband did all the bird care and she just watched.
Wish we knew of something that would cure it.
Annie

What a bummer!! Just watching your birds through a glass panel? I have allergies, too, fortunately, mine aren't that bad. Keeping the birds misted helps. I spray Isaac (my Grey) every day and he loves it. It helps with his grooming, too. Marion

I have pretty severe asthma and the last thing I needed was 3 toos but thats what I have. Two big ones and one small one. I take 2 kinds of meds for the asthma and keep an air cleaner going all the time. Misting the birds on a daily basis really helps. I also vaccumn a lot. If it got to where I really couldn't breath all the time I would have to do something I guess, but for right now we are OK. I'm sorry you have to part with your bird. Peggy
