The vet called me at 5 AM to let me know Bubba passed away peacefully. He took a turn for the worst late last night and I had brought him in. He wouldn't hold down anything, not even the sugar solution they gave him. His organs were failing. I'm not going to go into the details, I'm just too upset right now, just wanted to let everyone know that your prayers and answers and concern really touched my heart, and I thank you all. I've learned I can't take home a bird, or any animal for that matter, just because I feel sorry for it. I am stopping at the vet's office now, on my way to work, to see him one last time and give him one last head scratch. Though I only had him for a few days he found his way into my heart. And I will miss him dearly. Beth |

Thank you everyone. I think I got all my tears out last night as I was cleaning and disinfecting his cage and everything in it. It was just so sad. My alarm was still set for 3 AM when I'd go in and check on him and I got really sad about it. But I know I did my best, he was just too sick. My tiels eggs' should be hatching this weekend, so I'm sure that when the Lord closes a window, he opens a door... I can focus my love and attention on them now. Thank you again, I appreciate everything that has been said in this post! You are a wonderful group of people, and I'm so glad I found a group that is as caring and loving of all feather babies as I am!

Beth, did you contact the breeder and tell her about Bubba? She needs to know, and in my opinion, she owes you your purchase price as a refund. This should never have happened when she saw he was bubbly and allowed him to leave her place. If she refuses a refund, your vet could contact her or write a letter stating how sick he was on his very first day with you. Blessings to you. Annie |

Firstly I am sorry that the baby passed away... You did the right thing taking the baby to the vet... But it was my understanding you had contacted the breeder and it was I thought in one of the first posts the breeders vet you were taking it to.... at his wise suggestion. So the responsibility was to be the breeders.... and naturally he (breeder) should be made aware immediately that the bird passed on... the vets responsibility assuming it was HIS vet. He (the breeder) has a flock of birds including parent birds and chicks, probably several pairs and chicks so he needs to know the cause as to why one of the chicks passed away... he sold it as healthy............. Otherwise his whole flock could do likewise...have whatever caused the chick's demise. I have been so confused with this post .... the breeder should have offered to not only have you take the bird to HIS vet.... but should have now required a cause of death... and offered you a refund... Naturally until the cause of death is known HE DOES NOT have the right to suggest another bird in exchange... no bird should leave his dwelling and all the flock need to be quarantined until a vet's all clear is given... I know this comes off quite strong regarding the breeder and might ruffle some feathers.... naturally I am sorry the chick died. I am very sensitive to any birds death and it hurts so much.... I know you are hurting and I know you have other birds in the home and want to make sure whatever the chicks illness was, won't affect the birds still in your home.... therefore demand the breeder find out exactly WHAT caused the death..... |

I originally took the bird to his vet, which diagnosed the problem as a severe upper respiratory infection. I asked that I get everything in writing so that I could bring the bird to MY vet who is 10 mins from my home as opposed to 30-45 mins away in Queens. (I am on Long Island, 2 counties away) When I e-mailed the breeder about Bubba passing away, he offered me Bubba's sibling who had "just gotten over a cold" for $150 instead of $200. Honestly, I am too tired and too upset about the bird himself to argue over money. I told him when I got back from the vet to seperate the birds, take them to his vet and get them all checked out as well. He said he cured Bubba's sibling's cold with the ornacycline he got from the pet store (which I had also purchased, but then decided enough was enough and got him to the vet) and that the rest of his birds were fine (In all respects, the birds did look perfectly fine when I was there). I just know that I will NEVER deal with this person again, and when I go to my Parrot Society meeting tonight, I will make sure to make everyone else aware of who he is, where he is located and what has happened. Thankfully he didn't have a lot of birds. Just 2 pairs of Quakers and a pair of tiels (that I SAW anyway). As for my 3 tiels, they are acting as they normally do. I have vaccuumed the whole house, cleaned and wiped down every door handle, windows that I touched, washed all the clothes I had on when I touched Bubba, cleaned the carrier, threw out his blanket, cleaned the cage, toys, dishes-- everything so that there is as much prevention from his germs being spread as possible. I've been giving my birds a few extra drops of vitamins in their water and have made sure they're eating well. |

You are one sweet person Beth and no.... no more birds from him.... but the money he should refund... I would turn him in and tell him so if a refund wasn't sent to me immediately.... And I would inform his vet that the chick died and explain you are reporting the death as othe chicks had the same problem.... Runny nose, sneezing, those are warning signs...... Blessings to you as you deserve better... not an additional expense and a hurt heart.... |

I am livid over that breeder's ridiculous offer to allow you a discount on another bird. I hate that we are even having to talk about this with you in your sorrow, but he should not be allowed to get away with this. Court may be your only option and that would really be awful for you, besides expensive. A proper breeder would not have suggested an over the counter antibiotic. They have prescriptions available from their vets if they are truly breeders. The one he suggested to you is so weak, and perhaps has been stored for so long, that it is ineffective. I don't think that brand even has an expiration date which immediately tells us it is not going to be effective. Correct doses of antibiotics cannot be given in water. They have to be given directly into the birds mouth to get the correct dosage. It's hard, but necessary. And dosages are figured by the weight of the individual bird. The average person never knows this but a real breeder does know. I suggest that when you feel ready for another baby, get references and check them out carefully. Please believe me, I am not faulting you in any way. You trusted the seller (he's no breeder) to be honest and he was not. Annie |

I know Annie, I have learned through this, but unfortunately through the life of an innocent creature. I feel the stress of going back and forth with him would just eat me alive. It's worth fighting over, of course, but then again, it just isn't worth the time & energy. I don't have a negative bone in my body and to go after someone about this would make me so bitter. I probably gave Bubba more comfort in his last days than he would have gotten there, and that consoles me. I told the breeder about the antibiotics I rec'd at the vet, and told him they were inexpensive. |
